I'm a Map Geek

OK, I admit, I get more enjoyment from reading a map than reading the Sunday funnies or Newsweek (or New Speak).

I can see a metropolitan map and see by how the parks are set up and where the interstates cross cut communities to see where the low income neighborhoods are and where the ritzy people live. I can tell how culturally diverse a city is by how many city parks it has and also see how useless a city is by the huge size if the suburbs a compared to the city center...I can tell where the money in town is based on weather a neighborhood is made up of endless rows of grided streets or rambling lanes. IK can also look at how boring or lifelike a city is based on street grids...Now I've never been to Phoenix but the city looks way too planned out...Every damn street is a right angle..Whereas Boston looks like old worls Europe where streets are just thrown around due to centuries of growth...

Hey, I'm a geek, sue me...Tell me what city you live in and I'll give you my educated guess even if I've never been there...Of course this isn't a science, like fernology. It leaves room for interpretation...

Vegas would drive you insane. It is laid out in some ways and completely random in others.

I'va always wondered about Vegas. Don't have a very detailed map at the moment. Looks like everything is divied by LV Blvd. The SW looks nice, near Spring Valley. The NE looks nice due to all the golf courses. north Vesag looks like a shithole due to the gridded streets and the Air force Base. Military bases are in shit areas of town always. Soldiers are poor and cause trouble off base, keep them away from the golf courses. Can't really tall about the east side. Need a better map...

But Las Vegas always seemed like the exeption to the rule. Is that even a real place? Is it any more real that Disneyland? I have to wonder about a place whose sole existance is dependant on rustling money away from tourists...

Are you a local there? Is there such a thing?

If you ever get the chance to go to Spain, explore Barcelona. You'll love the Barri Gótic (Gothic Quarter), and the planned area of L'Eixample (the Expansion) belies its nature through elegant architecture.
