Father's Day Dedication

After reading all the posts about Father's Day, I felt compelled to write this.

My parents divorced when I was young and my father was not around when us kids were growing up. He left my mom with 4 young kids to raise. I believe he did pay child support but that was all.

There were a few times when he would arrange to come get us to spend time with him but most times he would never show up. I was too young to remember most if this but my older sister remembers and always resented him for that fact.

The father figure in my life was my grandfather, my mom's dad. We lived in a 2 family house downstairs from my grandparents. He was the best "dad" a kid could have growing up. He did things with us, took us out for ice cream once a week. Now we never went on any vacations due to financial reasons but he was always there for us.

There are things in life that we regret, one is that I called my dad when I was getting married to give me away. He was never there for us growing up, but there was this part of me that wanted to be traditional and have my father give me away. I regret that now, it should have been my grandfather or my mother walking me down the aisle. They were the ones that were there for me, raised me and loved me.

My grandfather loved all us kids and was a wonderful great-grandfather to both my kids. Even though he was gruff sometimes and we didn't always agree, I know he loved us.

Sadly my grandfather passed away at age 88 in July of 2000. There are so many things I wish I told him or done for him, but its too late now. I am just lucky that I and my children had so many wonderful years with him. He was much more of a father to me than my own!

So on this Father's Day I dedicate this post to my "Papa", I love you and I miss you!

Wishing all the fathers out there a very Happy Father's Day!

What a sweet post for all of us fathers out there. I hope your hubby gets what he wants for father's day. Me, since it is technically not my weekend with my son, I only have him for a few hours today. Not sure what we are planning on doing but at least I get to spend some time with him today.

If my boobs were bigger I'd be a BBW!

Great post, I enjoyed reading it. It was very similar for me as well, parents divorced, dad never around. Unfortunately, I never had the father figure you found in your grandfather, and for that I'm envious. I guess these experiences contribute to the people we are today, so I certainly can't complain. I'm guessing you feel somewhat the same way.

Take care, Steve
