FigHTinG for PeACe

It seems like everywhere I turn these days someone else is getting shot, stabbed, threatened, tortured, kidnapped, bombed or otherwise filled with fear.

“Bomb Attack In Iraq….Four Soldiers Killed”

“Clerk Robbed At Gunpoint”

“Another Woman Missing in Vancouver”

“Gang Violence Erupts in--------”

Even in my hometown, a city of only 250,000, we have a serious and growing problem with youth gangs and no one is quite sure how to deal with it. Seems like every week someone else is stabbed, shot or robbed by some wannabe gangster trying to get his “bone” to be accepted in the gang.

I’ve come to accept the fact that humans will always find a way and a reason to kill each other.

I do my best within my circle of influence to affect change, whether it’s the kids that live in my neighborhood or raising my own kids with a sense of right and wrong (along with some sense that human life has value) but sometimes….like right now…it becomes overwhelming.

I don’t have an opinion to share on the choices and actions of people or nations, but a little bit of me dies whenever another headline gets published, and I get a little more calloused to the horrible things going on.

I’ll leave you with another one of my mainstays from the music world, to think about.

One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

That's the problem LT....we are all getting a bit more calloused...I mean who could have thought you could eat and look at the news that we look at.....
We got to keep talking about it and not make it the norm....

What is the world coming to and can we do anything to better it is the question. Watching the news is out of the question for me anymore, all it does is depress me.

Its the whole "Don't want to get involved" or "It doesn't effect me" attitude that has spread like a virus though the country. Its called apathy and it really has reached epidemic proportions.

Just my 2 cents hun.

It sucks out there..way to much violence.
I try to keep the peace in my own piece of the universe and to show compassion and tolerance to all I meet.

Normally I would try to offer a more thoughtful comment, but am compelled to talk about the song you've chosen rather than the excellent comment itself. I had never heard that song UNTIL I saw the movie. So my first and forever after impression of it is as the Billy Jack character moves through the throng of townfolk. I was very young and impressionable and I swear...that was one of the most moving cinema moments of my life.

Come to think of it, this IS about your post after all. I believe that experience had a subtle but very strong influence on me thereafter. And that's exactly what Tom Laughlin set out to do with it. Hmmmmm. Maybe those litle things you do within your circle of influence will have a greater impact than it might seem.

Good post.

Oh yeah, one last thing...
I'm not affiliated with them, so this isn't a 'pimping for them comment' but one effort towards this end that I've noticed is a program called Teaching Tolerance. It's part of a larger thing called (I may not have this right) Southern Poverty Law Center, or something like that, I don't know. Anyway, the point is that the Teaching Tolerance program reaches out to kids, mostly on a teen level, in a very realistic, relavent discussion group kind of way. Like your influence on the neighborhood kids and Laughlin's influence on me, it seems like an investment in future generations.

Okay, that's all. Sorry for rambling but this post struck a chord, I guess.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

GREAT POST! The news is nothing but bad news! It really turns my stomach to see all the chaos & violence in the world. Here in Detroit we just had a big shooting in a not too far away church on a Sunday. Imagine that! The house of God is now being condemned with violence. NOTHING IS SACRED IN TODAY'S SOCIETY. I don't care where you lay your head, you are not safe!

I proudly say I am not desensitised, Never been a grandsatander on any platform and never stopped myself from letting rip when it is time to do so. You'd be quite surprised how quickly the 'don't want to get involved' reflex transmutes to the one's who started a prblem when they get noticed on a larger scale.

Taurus~

Good Post, thanx for sharing! The world can be filled with so much ignorance it hurts just to think about it. Like you, my approach is recognizing that while I can't change the entire world for the better, at least by my attitude and actions I might, if not stem the tide at least not add to the burden.

An adage I came up with after my x left me reflects my formative experiences growing up in the Garden part of New Jersey:

"When your World turns to Shit,

Plant Tomatoes!"

.

Been a while since they last let me out into polite society. Resurfacing, catching a breath, & catching up.

And while I got my Broad-Brimmed Pimping Hat on, could I cajole all of y'all to Comment on, Alone In A Cloud? It's probably the best thing that I've written!

Lately...

I agree! Things do seem to get worse. I'm not actually sure if it's that things are getting worse, or if it's b/c we are more aware of it now.

Special movie and song. Shaped my life as a young person.
(I lived in Tucson when the second movie was made.)
I do own 'Billy Jack' on DVD.
