Knights and warriors did not only use swords; they carried various daggers as well. It is pretty obvious that this is one type of them.

What is this type specifically used for?

I know I pulled the picture due to one of the points above. Some people see such a thing as a weapon instead of a piece of art. We all see things in a different light I guess.

Tis true mzhuny... I better pull that down. However, to me it is a sexy thing. It is a sword breaker used by knights to capture a enemy sword within its teeth and twist. This can lock their sword or snap it in half, thus saving their life by them winning their battle or duel.
