Singing Karaoke

It was a real kick in the shorts when my divorce filing was served last summer. I was in a major funk for 2-3 months and had not a clue as to what I'd do for the rest of my life.

I hadn't done the bar scene in 20 years. But I tended bar in a neighborhood establishment in college. So I started stopping in at a few local establishments.

On the night that changed things for me, I stopped in on Karaoke night. This friendly drunk started hasseling me about getting up and singing. I hadn't sung in public for 40 years. Finally I agreed to sing a song with him.

When the host called our name we both picked up our mikes. When the song began he set down his mike and walked away. I struggled through my first song.

I do a lot of public speaking. Giving a presentation in front of 100 people doen't intimidate me. Yet singing a song at a bar ... I couldn't believe how nervous I was.

After the first song, I decided that I was going to practice before I tried it again. I had received an iPod as a thank you for a presentation a few months back. So I downloaded some songs from iTunes and started singing duets with the lead singer.

A week later I sang my second song at the same bar, and my third, and my fourth. And I started getting better. The sound of applause from perfect strangers is a real lift. I started to feel better about myself.

You meet lots of nice people on Karaoke nights. I have a number of new friends I sing with.

Now it's 2-3 nights a week. My favorite KJ last night showed me some statistics that his computer hosting software generates. In the last five months, I'm third in number of appearances and fifth in number of unique songs sung. I guess you could say I've gone from no life to a one-track Karaoke life.

He's running a contest next month. In his last contest I came in 5th of 11 singers on a preliminary round night.

This time I'm going to make it into the semi-finals. I kidded him last night that I was considering not entering as I'll be out of town on finals night. He got this big smile on his face. I could just hear him thinking "Tom, there's no chance in hell you'll make it into the finals".

But we can dream, can't we.

Wisconsin............too cold there right now! I lived in Milwaukee in the 60' from Illinois originally...and yet Madison, if I remember correctly, is a college town? Probably LOTS of Karaoke
places there! Karaoke places are not just bars

Just a little food for thought.............
