The Snake Pit

Remember hearing about the snake pits they used to put depressed or otherwise emotionally unstable individuals in? I guess the idea was to induce so much fear and torment in them that they forgot about what "ailed" them, what got them to the point of despair and hopelessness. Once removed from the confines of the snake pit, they could go about their lives happily and emotionally healthy. What a concept. Throw a wounded individual into a den of asps and call it helping them.
Thankfully, that horrific treatment is no longer considered humane, and is no longer used. And, thankfully, mental health education has provided the public with better ways to handle victims in emotional distress.
Unfortunately, there are still some incredibly selfish and heartless individuals out there that will abandon their so-called loved one to the anguish of trying to claw their way out of the snake pit alone.
How evolved are we...really?

That I am. Lies and abandonment during an already stressful time almost put me over the edge. I'm okay though.
