Supersize me

I watched supersize me last night. For those that don't know it is a mad documentary made by Spurling Mortlock that follows his life as he attempts to eat nothing but Macdonalds for thirty days. I have seen this documentary 3 times now and every time it scares the shit out of me! Now I am no small fragile girl, but what we are doing to our bodies is frightening! In particular the kids today. Just thinking about it makes me shudder.
Think I will go have a Coke!

I agree. And "Supersize Me" scared the shit out of me too. Especially in the context of how we feed our children.

In my instance, I became a father late in life, and my little princess has just turned 3. Being a competitive sportsman, I'm quite concerned with staying as "light" as possible - and obviously diet plays a major role in that.

Nonetheless, it simply amazes me how quickly Madeleine has discovered "pleasure food". And like all little kiddies, she has the capacity to pester like you wouldn't believe. The hardest lesson I've learnt recently regarding kiddies is that sometimes, you have to be cruel to be kind - for THEIR benefit. And that means plain out saying NO to certain foods.

She's learning. She understands that certain "pleasure foods" have "too much sugar" and that such foods aren't good. She understands she needs to eat "healthy food" and she's reached the point where she can be my "date" now at a restaurant and enjoy the "super nice food". But it's been a grind.

And why do I mention all this? Because "Supersize Me" is all about corporatised food piracy - indeed, it could have just as easily been about Kentucky Fried Chicken or any other major fast food chain. The bottom line for these corporations is "shipping product", and doing the right thing by society comes a long, LONG distant second place.

Oh... by the way Jemsweet... this Saturday night Maddy and I are having dinner at Shuck Restaurant at Tedder Ave. If you're swinging by, stop and say hello. I won't recognise you of course unless you (a) introduce yourself or (b) shove your bum in my face! I'm assuming option (b) is gonna be ruled out! (smile)

I totally agree. It's also alarming to now see these companies advertising and pushing so called "healthy meals". Their still using processed meats, serving out fries and that crap they call soft drink.

How many times have we seen kids chucking a spack attack in a shopping mall, because Mum or Dad won't take them into Macka's or Jack's everytime they walk by. Most time's, the kids win out.

Good on ya 'ivedude' for explaining and teaching your little one what real food is about.
