Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy Apr 6, 2012 6:51 am

I'm taking my granddaughter to see the play, Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy on Sunday. Didn't realize it was Easter when I bought the tickets so we have to come straight home so she can go to Easter dinner with her other grandparents and family but that's ok.

I'm looking forward to this one because as she gets a little older the plays get better. This one is about former slaves living on an island that the white folks want so we're getting a little deeper subject matter than the last one we saw...The Wizard of Oz, although you know we all learned something from that one too.

She just turned 9, and a precocious 9 at that. Only child and her mother has done a wonderful job raising her. (her mom also beats the tar out of me on a regular basis playing Words with Friends). I'm thinking Orchestra Hall is our next foray into the cultured world. I've gotten to introduce her to theatre and museums so music is logically the next step to me. Aaron Neville is coming to Minneapolis next week and thanks to friend Doe, I have a lot of his music and love him to pieces...if I can get tickets I'm going to ask her mom if I can take her.

How wonderful to have a grandchild...precious to me.

Another great night with Janiva Magness last night. She had a bit of a cold, came down with the crud we've all had here (I've lost my voice) earlier this week, but she still put on a great show. She has a pretty tight band ~ I love watching the bass player in any band...they're always so cool and laid back, and hers is no exception. I like it that there are still folks writing new blues music. She had 3 co-writes on her latest album and is up again for Best Female Vocalist at the Blues Awards this year. If she wins, it will be 4 years in a row for her. Last year she won the BB King Entertainer of the Year award - she does put on a good show.

Retirement Mar 23, 2012 8:38 pm

I'm considering it. Not quite old enough yet, but I have the time in, plus I have service time to count with it (Air Force). The Post Office is talking incentives for folks like me - they need new people they can pay less and I don't see the Post Office in the same way anymore. My friends are leaving soon and I'm not sure I want to be the "last man standing" so to speak.

Although I love my job (I don't throw mail), I'm kind of getting tired of going to work every day. It's not as much fun as it used to be and I find myself getting irritated some days, mostly with stupidity - both on the employee's and the customer's part. My workload has increased some and decreased in other ways, both for the good I think and I'm not going to complain about what I do, or what I have to do.

I want to move to Atlanta but I'm torn about it. Leaving my kids and grandchild will be hard on me but living in Minnesota is hard on a single woman with a bad back who owns a house, too. I'm not sure I have enough friends... I do however, have a brother in Atlanta that I would like to be closer to - as I've said in a previous post, it seems the only time I see my extended family is at funerals anymore - I don't want the next time my brother sees me to be at mine. I have another brother and sister in the Black Hills I would like to be closer to as well, but we're not, we never have been and I doubt we ever will be.

But retirement...it's hard to think of myself as retired - am I old enough? Am I THAT old? Or am I just ready to go?

I took this series of pictures of the dog out the window today. He must have been pleased about the 60 degree weather and was probably anticipating the walk I took him on later. I was laughing out loud watching him run around and roll on the ground.

Emotional Day Mar 10, 2012 8:32 pm

I went to a funeral for a cousin of mine today. Haven't seen her in years but we were the same age and spent much of our childhood together. Family functions, holidays, etc...time at Grandma's, stuff like that.

It seems that I only see my extended family at funerals anymore and I'm kind of sorry about that. As our own families fall apart though, parents die, we spread out in different states, it's hard to stay close and I'm not all that sure it even matters in the long run. I saw three of my other cousins there though, and that's really what I'm talking about. The two women, one just a few years younger than me and the other, her sister, maybe 15 years younger than me...my dad's sister's children. Nice to see them, chatted a little bit, did the hugs and exchanged emails and phone numbers. I looked up at that point though, and saw a man walk through the vestibule door and I started tearing up immediately...my dad's other sister's son - he looks so much like my dad it was a shock I wasn't expecting. I haven't seen him in about 10 years and didn't notice it last time.

What was wonderful about seeing him though was that he gave me a CD with my father's mother's family history on it. Going back to about 1875, a 154 page PDF of the family - so from my Great Great Grandparents up to my Grandmother. I found out my Great Great Grandfather settled the area here in Minnesota just 11 miles from where I live today. Back when it was still called The Big Woods. I am in awe. I had no idea. I was named after one of his daughters - my great grandmother (pictured). Being interested in history anyhow, this CD made my day, well worth suffering though a funeral (I'm the family crybaby). The pictures alone are worth their weight in gold. I'm so glad I went...I was considering not going.

My Grandmother on the left, 9th of 17 children in her family. 13 pictured here.

Buddy Guy Mar 2, 2012 10:27 pm

Oh. My. God.

Just got home from seeing Buddy Guy at the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. I don't think I've ever seen a better blues show. He did a fair amount of talking but he played solid blues for two and a half hours. My god, that man can play the guitar. He did a little acoustic in the middle, played some John Lee Hooker, Clapton, Marvin Gaye and then got back on his electric guitar and did some Albert King, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells and of course some damn good Buddy Guy. He put on a hell of a show.

Quinn Sullivan on the left with Buddy Guy

The highlight for me though, was a 12 year old kid who opened for him. His name was Quinn Sullivan, and let me tell you, this kid has what it takes...as his song went - he's a blues child. A blues virtuoso. He saw Buddy Guy when he was 7, and Buddy Guy invited him up on stage to play with him. They haven't looked back. He's got a CD out and I bought it, he autographed it for me and I listened to it on the way home. Not as good as hearing him tonight, but you can tell he's on his way. The kid was amazing.

I'm never gonna get to sleep tonight...

Dear HeartCollector,

Unfortunately, we've had to revoke your free Silver Membership because your Icebreakers are no longer being sent. Please make sure that your Icebreaker is set to 'active', and have an approved photo in your profile. Go to your Icebreaker Preferences page to review your settings. Also check your cupid preferences. You don't want to make them too restricted and lose out the opportunities to meet new people. We will reactivate your Silver membership once the problem is fixed.

The Adult FriendFinder Team

My reply: (since you won't allow replies from the mail program)

Adult FriendFinder Team, I regret to say someone has been fiddling with my settings from the inside!! YES!!...it's an inside job! Do you have some Sneaky Pete in there pretending to be working diligently solving real problems when in reality, he's unchecking boxes? I checked my settings...they were all the same, "active", just the way I left them! You've deactivated me in error and alas...I'm stranded in the land of sex gods and horny women with no way to contact them!

Sincerely,
HeartCollector

*sigh...friend Doe...my first experience with ineptitude in the land of Get Laid or Your Money Back! Good thing I didn't lay the big bucks out there.

Finally...just when winter should be over Feb 29, 2012 11:50 am

Geeze, quite honestly, I was hoping we'd escape. We haven't had any snow to speak of up here in Mid-Minnesota. Yesterday on my way to work I could see bare ground everywhere, just a little bit here and there. Today...not. Last night on my way home from work it was freezing rain and starting to get slushy on the highway. I got home and my mailbox was frozen shut, slick with ice. Luckily, my son had thrown out some salt before he left so I had a path to the front door from the garage but everything had a coating of wet ice on it. This morning I went to let the dog out and had to stop him from going down the deck steps - he would have busted his ass. Took him downstairs through the house and let him out the back - 5 hours later it's belly deep on him and still coming down. Heavy and wet. Neighbors across the street are stuck in the driveway...I called my boss this morning and asked for the day off. I don't need to go anywhere but my son is going to wish he had stayed home and kept up with it instead of trying to shovel the whole driveway and front sidewalk, steps and deck steps when he finally comes home...and the 3 foot drift the snowplow left in front of the driveway.

Ugh. I knew it was too good to last.

There was bare ground out here yesterday.

Teenager Cat Back in the House...or the Luck of the Irish... Feb 29, 2012 11:36 am

Can you believe the luck of this girl? My daughter's cat (a Tomcat) has gone missing twice. The first time someone took him to the Humane Society and just luckily, we had listed him there and they called. The second time, she brought him to my house to live since she was leaving for some time. He took off again. We posted flyers in the grocery store, on telephone poles, at the DQ and the gas stations. A month later someone called - and now he's back home again. This time he has a collar on with my phone number on it. They were calling him "Patrick" and feeding him in the garage. I'm glad he wasn't out in the cold and I'm so happy someone had the compassion to feed him...but how lucky is that? The girl is Irish on both sides of the family, she must have gotten an extra big dose! But now...Patrick or Elmer? What do you think?

I'm thinking NEUTERED!!

This was too good to pass up. We have an area at the Post Office called the Nixie Desk. It's where everything without an address, broken open packages and just downright weird stuff ends up to be figured out. Sometimes we can't figure it out...This stuff just comes in with the mail.

"Set me up for capture"...hmm...I'm thinking the man might have spent a little time in the room with the bars on the windows...
