Actual News Item

Search your favorite news source today folks; the Scandinavian Air Force has paid a handsome sum to a part-time Santa to compensate him.

And for what, you ask? Two F-16s on a training mission were flying too low, and gave one of his two reindeer (Rudolph, would you believe?) a heart attack.

I suspected that there had been some global belt-tightening, but I'm wondering about the other seven reindeer. The article didn't name the survivor, but that means Santa cut seven of those poor creatures loose this year.

I am hoping that this was only a seasonal layoff. Perhaps Santa will bring them back once business picks up. Kind of like teaching school here, but in reverse - 9 months or so of no paycheck, then 3 months of total hell (making the kids of the world happy).

So what do the furloughed reindeer do? Has anyone spotted them hanging out in some neighborhood bar, playing darts and bragging about the does they wanna do? Are they in rehab (Just one more sprinkle of pixie dust, dude. I can handle it.)?

Or have they just blended in with the rest of the homeless in some major city? Are they standing at freeway exits holding signs that read, "Will fly for food"?

What kind of sicko lays off reindeer? Is there no loyalty from companies anymore?

mzhuny - Wel, yeah - but SANTA? What's this world coming to? Now I'm wondering if he has started outsourcing the toys to elves in southeast Asia...

keithcan - Thank Beowulf the happiness of the world's children doesn't sit in your hands. Or in your lap. If you think it does, let's introduce you to Michael Jackson. But I'm not going to go there.

helga - Natural selection at its best; any species that hasn't figured out how to make camoflage outfits or to pull a trigger is fair game. Have I been living in the South too long? And I guess it is good news that those displaced reindeer aren't suffering anymore.

Hardly, welcome to my quote file.

"Natural selection at its best; any species that hasn't figured out how to make camoflage outfits or to pull a trigger is fair game."

That will go over really well at work!
