A Long Holiday Weekend

This weekend is a long one for us, in our part of the country Friday was a public holiday, "Helige Drei Koenige" Holy Three Kings, the day of the Three Wise Men.

It began really on Thursday night, as on this day it is traditional in these parts to have "Stern Wuerfeln" "Stern" is Star and "Wuerfeln" are dice.
In sports clubs and lots of other social clubs and the pubs friends gather to play dice for the "Stars" which in fact are Stars made of a type of white bread. In other villages and towns in the area they have many differant names and designs accoding to tradition or the baker, but in Mrs GB's home town they are called Stars.

So we all gathered on Friday night at our sports club and we won seven, and more or less cleaned up, no problem what to have for breakfast the next day.

Friday is the end of the Christmas time and all the trees are taken down, and decorations put away untill next December.
We always leave ours on the balcony for a while, then bring it down to our small terrace grill place, where it will be used on the first warm days of spring for a small grill party with our neighbours. it makes a perfect small fire and embers to place the charcoal for the grill.

On this day the "Stern Saengers" also come around, they are like carol singers but dressed as the three wise men.

The day was hectic for us, as the wife, Junior Miss and her boyfriend are leaving early Saturday for a weeks skiing in Austria, so the day was full of packing suitcases skis, boots etc, into the car. I just kept out of their way!.

When it was all over we then went off to our local Greek resturant for an evening meal, which was rather special as it is also an Greek religious holiday too, and all sorts of special delicacies were on offer.

So it is now the end of all that "Peace on Earth" and "Goodwill to all Men" for another year, and back to normal!.

6 am Saturday morning. amazingly , all three managed to leave on time, and are now on their way.

I have many things planned for the following week, but will probably in my normal fashion begin 6 or 7 projects, and half finish 2 or 3!
As a world champion procrastinator, I should realy make a few resolutions about improving that situation, but will probably never get around to it!.

The pic is an example of the "Stern"

Sounds like a lot of fun!

We have something like that in Croydon this weekend. Being an outsider I'm not really aware of all the details but I believe it's called something like "January Bluefest" and it involves lots of young people, suffering from the post-holiday anti-climax, roaming around the centre of town, getting drunk and smashing windows, cars and - occasionally - pedestrians ...

Ah, the joys of youth ...
