Everything you always wanted to know about Alaska and were afraid to ask. Part-4

Land of Fire and Ice:

You may have heard Alaska is referred to as the land of fire and ice. This is because over half the world’s glaciers and half the worlds active volcanoes are in Alaska.

One of the notable ice fields is the Harding Ice Field located about 120 miles south of my home. It is over 300 square miles and one mile deep. It is bigger than the state of Rhode Island. Ironically, Alaska has less than ten percent of the paved roads in Rhode Island. The Harding Ice Field feeds over 320 glaciers.

The Malspina Glacier is larger than the country of Switzerland!

There are presently 27 active volcanoes in Alaska. Twice in the past 20 years Anchorage has been buried in Ash due to eruptions.

The associated picture taken from my home of an ash cloud from Mt. Redoubt descending on Anchorage in 1992. The photo was take in the afternoon. It is not a sunset.
