When My Fist Clenches, Crack It Open

Every now and then it happens. I will be sitting around and just playing guitar and a particular song just fits that particular moment and the particular mood that I am in at that particular time. One of those times occurred today.

I am helping my youngest daughter and some of her friends with a talent contest act. The theme is “That ‘70s Night” and so she wants her band to play some ‘70s music. I was sitting in the gymnasium at my youngest daughter’s school tuning her guitars and I just began to play. It just matched my mood for the day.

Behind Blue Eyes .

written by Pete Townsend

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you

No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

And If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
And If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
.

“Who’s Next” has always been one of my favorite albums, and although I love “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, this is my favorite song on the album. (For anyone born after the mid-80s, albums are the shiny black things that scratch really easily and warp when your sister leaves them in the sun.)

Like I said up above, the song just seemed so particularly appropriate. That song is me. I am the bad man, the sad man, behind blue eyes.

was always one of my favorite songs too. Tells of a person's struggle between who he shows the world and who he really is.

But I gotta say, any man who cooks in the nude couldn't be all that bad! -B

Will never be able to see you as the "bad" man. Sad perhaps...but never "bad".

I make mistakes, I am out of control & at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. ~Marilyn

imp, sad it is. Something I read today left me disturbed on a very basic level.

libgem, I grew up on Who country - North London. The Who was the very first concert that I ever went too.

And while cooking nude is fun, don't cook anything that spatters.

You are the most interesting man...no matter what mood you are in...but you have great resilience and you won't stay sad...now why you think you are "bad" not sure about that...but I don't believe it to be true...

kind thoughts,
Moonfire

I think that's everyones song in one way or another.
And it's got great harmony for singing.

jay, like many Pete Townsend songs, it has fantastic chord structure. Perhaps the only accoustic guitar technician who can come close to Pete Townsend is Neil Young.

simplyfun, please continue to visit and leave comments. I welcome everyone here.

This song is from one of the golden ages of rock. That whole period from 1969 through 1975 generated some amazing music. My oldest daughter is just beginning to explore a lot of it so I am suddenly listening to a lot of Crazy Horse, Who, Stones, Kinks, Peter Frampton all overa again.

And you know what? It sounds pretty damn good - especially some of the albums that have been remastered.

moonfire, thank you for the compliment. I would much rather be interesting than rude and crude (although I can have my moments). I just enjoy what I am doing here and try to convey as much of what I am thinking about as I feel comfortable revealing.

The side issues of what I was thinking about are also covered in the next post.
