What's in a name

Nicknames...many of us have been stuck with them over the years. They are generally not the most complimentary of things. As would be expected, mine comes from playing soccer.

So imagine walking into a crowded bar on a Friday night and having 15 or more drunk guys yell "Poodle" when you enter.

It was bestowed on me 25 years ago by a team mate who was pissed off with my rather hyperactive nature on game day and also amused by the way I would, at 5'7", take on any and all comers on the field: especially much bigger and heavier players. He thought I looked like a poodle taking on a rottweiler.

I reminded him of his granny's poodle - and he hated that fuckin' dog with a passion: and he and I never really saw eye to eye. So he started calling me "Poodle" on the field and it stuck. Even my daughter, "ringer" calls me "Poo" when we play co-ed together.

So who else has a nickname they hate, or like.
Who has the great story behind the name.

It's not a fair comparison..my Marine buddies still call me by my radio callsign 'Repoman', as I do by theirs.

My youngest son, when he was 6 or 7, was a shortstop on his baseball team and I was one of the coaches. Since we had four little boys on that team with the same first names, we nicknamed three...mine was and still is 'Spike'. Even his teachers used to call him Spike. Now he plays high school soccer and is known by the same nickname..

As nicknames go, that's not a bad one to have....

My dad called me Screwball. I don't know why, maybe he had a ball while he was screwing to get me?

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

(whipped cream--don't ask ) during my high school years by some of my burn out friends; and finally became "Playful" during college.

"ringer" is called ringer when she plays soccer because she is exactly that: our teams ringer. She is 15 years old and better than any player male or female in an adult co-ed league with a lot of good senior players.
