The Protagonist's Tale
The Protagonist's Tale
(the final installment)
While all of the histrionics were continuing on through halftime, the "ringer" went and changed for the second half of football. She had been wearing board shorts, t-shirt and ratty indoor shoes in order draw attention away from her game.
At the half, she changed into soccer shorts, a soccer shirt and put on her favourite Umbro indoor match shoes: bright red and ostentatious. The ponytail went away and her hair went back to being worn the way she likes to for a real game - hanging loose and kept out of her face with a piece of rolled up underwrap -she thinks it makes her look Argentinian.
We lined up for the second half with "the ringer" at center forward. She decided to show off by standing on top of the ball - and informing the other team she was going to light them up. The whistle went............ and she was off and running. We tagged along since it looked like a fun ride.
I will not bore you with details. It was revelatory to my daughter because she does not usually play with a chip on her shoulder. This time she did and the other team paid. She scored 4 times in the second half. She set up goals. She defended and she put on a show with her ability to control the game.
Me - I ran my arse into the ground to embarass the other team. My friends did too. Our other female players also joined in the fun. We embarrassed the other team. The final score was 16-8 and it could have gotten worse had we left my daughter on the field in the final five minutes. She was off talking to all of her new admirers that were watching from the sidelines.
As a postscript, the league decided that the college kids should not be playing against the old folks and "promoted" them to a higher division playing teams their own age. It will be a very long season for them.
For us it was beer, pizza, ice packs and ibuprofen all around. The "ringer" likes a beer too after a game so we snuck her one. She didn't play this week since the game conflicted with her attending a high school football game - but next week they are on the road and she plans on playing. Word is out on her - and no-one will try to wind her up.
For me the game was almost a throw back to the glory days of the 80's: lots of aggro, tons of profanity, a beleaguered referee, and a shit load of skill on display.
Of course, it took all week for all of us old guys to recover.
