Saturday, I wrote about some material things I have that I could not do without. That is not necessarily true. They are just things and I would miss them but life would go on.

But there really are items that have incredible value to me that I did not list. These are irreplaceable.

1. My granny's recipe file (like you thought she would leave it to my mum?). Now for those of you who understand that the English Cookbook is one of the 3 shortest books in the world (the German Book of Humour and the Big Book of Italian War Heroes being the others) let me tell you that my Irish granny could cook. I have her recipe for Steak and Kidney pie and trifle and all kinds of good things. I have added plenty of good things to it.

2. My grandad's coaching whistle and stopwatch. I use the whistle for running practise every day and that way I know he is watching over me and what I am doing. Plus it makes such a great sound when the team runs lots and lots of sprints.

3. The local newspaper from 1956 that covered my dad signing a professional contract to play for one of the top English soccer teams.

4. A small Waterford rose bowl that my other granny left me in her will. It is probably one of only 2 or 3 valuable things she had and it always has flowers in it.

5. 4 8 x 10 black and white photographs in matching frames. The photos are of one of my grandad's teams from the 1930s, one of my dad's teams from the 1960s, one of my teams from the 1980s and one of "ringers" more recent teams: 4 generations of footballing Village Idiots.

6. All of my dad's medals and trophys. There is a lot of them.

7. My grandad's WW2 fireman's helmet and medals. My other grandad's WW2 gas mask and his Tommy helmet. What can I say, those guys are heroes in my eyes and always will be.

8. A complete set of 1930s Encyclopaedia Brittanica - with WW2 supplement. There are some amazing things in those books.

Now, as long as any fires don't burn too fast, I can get everything out of my place (I have the helmet and I can blow the whistle!). Of course, the enyclopaedias are pretty damn heavy. One day I will list the things that can just go up in flames.

Hi there lmp, the thought of granny's steak and kidney pie used as an erotic stimulant is, vaguely, disturbing. (Just kidding) And just for you, the salmon are running and I am going out fishing with bubba early Saturday morning - that means salmon for dinner Saturday night.
