Beyond the Pale: Back to the Wildlands

Most don't know what that phrase means "The Pale" but it has nothing to do with color, and everything to do with what is considered civilized and uncivilized.

In 1160 Norman-English lords came into Ireland, brought by the promise of a deposed Irish king (there were mulitple at the time, and there always had been...there has never been one king of Ireland) to pay them in land. Thus came the first foothold of English law, though for a time it would only be centered around Dublin, and in an area called "The Pale" where they had the strongest influence. Beyond The Pale Brehon law ruled, and the Norman-English had little control. Sadly, that would change.

I am not Irish, but of Irish descent. I know the name of the tiny town where one of my immigrant-Irish relatives came from, in 1875 at the age of 16, and I can stand at the grave of my ancestors there in the graveyard of the church they attended.

What the English called "Beyond the Pale" was where my people lived and died. I am, by those ways, a "barbarian," uncivilized.

I also have a merciless drive to push myself to be a better and whole person.

Why do I say all this? Because I can feel it in my jaws, and feel the push behind my back. It's time for change, and it's going to be sizable.

One of those changes will be at 9:30 this morning when I meet with a personal trainer for the first time and make my way towards loosing weight.

I won't delude myself or others, at between 272 and 276 pounds, I am not a small woman, and though my health has been perfect, I can't let it sit any longer. Yes, according to the photo I have big breasts, but you don't see the rest of the body. Which reminds me, I need to make measurements.

Let me put it to you this way, I'm tired of being a large woman. Sure, I have a fiancee who loves me as I am, but I don't. I'd like to think that someday someone would be slightly envious of my sweetheart, that he has my attentions and not them.

Beyond that, it's time for bed.
