Dennis Rodman wedding story may turn ugly later

An Indian college girl has temporarily married her teenaged boyfriend's elder brother so she can live in the same house as her lover until he is old enough to marry her, the Indian Express reported Tuesday.

Sneha Patel, 19, a resident of the western Indian state of Gujarat, was in love with Yash Kishan Parmar, also 19, and wanted to marry him despite her parents' opposition to the match, the newspaper said.

But the legal age for marriage in India -- 18 for girls and 21 for boys -- put a spoke in their plans. Live-in relationships are not very popular in the tradition-bound country.

Patel and Parmar eloped briefly but, not wanting to be on the run until Parmar was 21, Patel proposed that she would marry his elder brother and divorce him two years later.

The elder brother even agreed to sign a contract saying he would divorce Patel after two years and treat her as his younger brother's wife until then, the newspaper said.

.
.
This i believe is not only going to destroy the futer marriage, yet destroy the brothers relationship if it turns sour. What do you think is going to happen with this family ? are they all going to survive ?

Bad things happen when you try to conform to unreasonable family demands.

I think in the US it wuoldn't work. They'd end up on Jerry Springer. But who knows. Its hard to believe that they think divorce is a better option than letting a 19 yr old man marry. I guess I don't see why they can just live separately for 2 more years.

Since I love my siblings very much it wouldn't be a problem for me. I think it depends on the family. My uncle Bill married his brother's widow three years after his brother passed away. I used to tease my brother-in-law that when I became divorced I became his sudo Souix wife. And since I can't imagine how my sister sleeps with my brother-in-law to begin with there would never be an issue of sex.

I think in those cultures sex is more a thing of obligation. Yes it something out of love and commitment, but it is also something that is given to men out of obligation. The Indian culture is very similar to the Islamic culture in this way (My previous marriage was Islamic and many of my friends are Eastern Indian). Even if the the two were to bed together nightly and the brother were to sleep with his younger brothers future wife, it would be the price paid and more of an honor bestowed upon the woman for being able to stay in the home with her future husband. Sex and love are almost two very separate things in those cultures. A womans body belongs to her husband. A womans heart belongs to herself. Until she marries her future husband (the younger brother), her body would of course be of use to the older brother. I am sure that respect for this relationship was mentioned in terms bearing children and household planning, not interms of sexual favors and bedroom activities.

I read that article yesterday... I thought it was sweet!! Though I don't see why they do'nt just wait 2 years, then marry when it's legal. But my reading of it, the elder brother is agreeing to treat his wife as his younger brothers wife, not as his own... so i'd assume sex would have no part of it. But perhaps i'm wrong.

CAZ,

in certain Indian states, this is perfectly normal. That is a wife marrying brothers. In grad school, several colleagues were from Inida and explained (and this is just one example) that in such a marriage the brothers did not necessarily live under the same roof. In order to ascertain whether the wife was occupied by one husband, he would leave his shoes outside at the front door.

Understand that 3/5ths (as in the vast majority) of the world's population live by morals not guided by so-called Western Civilization. And that in a nation where theer is a distinctly lop-sided ratio of men to women (many more men) that this is merely a practical solution. That brothers should marry, is a surprisingly Darwinian solution keeping one's descendants if not within your own genetic line, then at least knowing children are from a closely related gene pool.

ohh ohhh!! i saw that movie.... "Fire" something... hmm... Truth by Fire? Honor by Fire?? um... i can't remember but if it's the one i'm thinking, the wife is either set or catches herself on fire after being found out, and survives it, and all the family is amazed. Then she leaves them to be with her female lover. Is that the one?

SensuallyKatey-

I found this very interesting, how it may effect the western culter may vary from person to person, yet as explained by others, this perfectly normal to other culters .

wyvernrose I think this is very interesting, indeed it is all paperwork, yet if the first brother is just there for the paperwork, 2 years is a long time to be together, at the end of the contract, there might be some feelings between the two, and then there will be war among the families !...yet as explained by others , this is normal

Thank you, thank you and thank you again, my point exactly....Whats 2 more years going to do for them, IF they truly love each other....they can wait, yet they are young and desperate to get laid.

demonicsexkitten- This is very debatable what goes on behind close doors, the brother and this girl for 2 years, there has to be a slip or an accident or a "Mistake between the 2" if there is suppose to be no sex involved, yet if there is...they are both lucky dogs.

Ha ! i knew it was a movie !! I Just explained it above in another post , that i was so sure this situation was made into a movie ! ....yet you are so correct, other cultures are so diffrent from ours. What may seem so normal to them, may be so off the wall to us, and vise versa as well.

Hey buddy, thanx for stopping by !

What you are saying does make sense, and i totally understand where you are coming from. Im finding other Cultures that are not of the western, very interesting-how they live and survive is so diffrent from our own, it makes you realize how spoiled this nation and society really is.
