Music of a Spiritual Path

The Dark Side of the Moon

My all time favorite musical artist is by far Pink Floyd but this is based almost completely because of their "Dark Side of the Moon" album. Yes, that's right I said "album" because when this first came out in 1973 it was on vinyl!

I was fortunate to see it that year in Los Angeles. It was the most mind blowing, overwhelming, concert experience of my life, either before or after. The graphics, the light show, the props, and the overall performance were way ahead of it's time and I have still never seen anything to compete.

But by far it was the power of the music and the lyrics that made that music the most incredible musical influence of my life. The words capture the essence of all of life and living on this planet. The combination of the music and lyrics has always had a powerful effect on me in all of those reflective moments of introspection. To me the music embodies all of the essence of life and the spiritual journey that life is.

Twenty years after "Dark Side of The Moon" came out, I was fortunate to see another Pink Floyd concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Most excellent again. Now Pink Floyd has just released "PULSE" a two DVD collection of their work. It was filmed at a live concert in London. The graphics and light show part of it are better than ever including potent political commentary. The second DVD is the entire "Dark Side of the Moon"! I just got it and it is fantastic. I turned the volume up and treated the entire community to a free Pink Floyd concert. Apologies to all the neighbors who aren't fans. LOL

For those of you not familiar with their music, here is a sample of their lyrics from the song; "TIME".

Time
(Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour)

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

I respect Floyd and acknowledge their accomplishments and contributions, but for me, it's a physical thing. I dont' know what it is, but any and all Pink Floyd music makes me physically nauseous. I lived with a guy for a year once and he was a HUGE Floyd fan. It made it rough.

Music makes life worth living.

Now there you have it! One man's music of spiritual awakening is another woman's physical nausea. LOL

You will note that I focused on the Dark Side of the Moon album. The funny part is that I only got into their next album, Wishing You Were Here, a little bit and the rest of their music I am largely unfamiliar with.

A worse statement for me, by me, is that Pink Floyd's movie, "The Wall" is the ONLY movie that I have ever walked out on. And I have seen some really bad movies. So there it is, some kind of statement. Just not sure what the statement is.
