Alcohol- Truth Serum or Truth Decay?

Besides highlighting an over obsession with the lives of celebrities on the part of the media and public alike, the arrest of Mel Gibson for DUI has brought up several other issues.

Amongst them is the effect of alcohol besides just getting you intoxicated. Yes we all know that alcohol impairs your judgment but in what way. I heard it said that there is an old expression that:

"When the ALCOHOL goes in, the TRUTH comes out!"

]Most of us acknowledge the ability of alcohol in lowering our inhibitions, even calling it a drink of courage. Most of us men, in a moment of honest, would admit that we have gotten at least some sex that we would not have without it. But I have always looked at it as a cop out when someone blames the booze for their bad behavior or "indiscretions". I think it is the liquor that allows them to have at least part of their REAL self to be revealed.

I have heard others say that they have done things that they would have never done with out the alcohol. Right! And? One can still argue that this behavior is still you but is just heavily suppressed through sobriety.

Your thoughts please?

I always remember exactly what I've said and done under the influence, although I may or may not admit it to anyone else. I always know when I'm drinking when what I'm saying or doing is something I wouldn't normally do, but I would also never ever do anything that went against my grain or who I am. I don't believe that drinking will make you say things you would normally find abhorrent. It doesn't suddenly turn you into an anti-semite. Those thoughts/feelings/opinions have to be there in the first place. I have NO IDEA what the fuck he was thinking, but he was obviously out of control in a self destruct mode. It certainly throws a lot of his past history into a certain light, doesn't it???

All I can say is

Good Luck, Mel. Nice knowin ya.

EVEN when I was worshiping the porcelain throne, I remembered kneeling and reciting all of the usual mantras like: "I swear I will never blah, blah, blah,..." I have passed out drunk before, but that was in my bed and I still remember getting there. Like you, I know I have never done anything while drunk that I would otherwise find abhorrent.

It seems like every time someone does something or says something to embarrass themselves, they always want to blame the liquor. It's the old "the devil made me do it" lame excuse. Alcohol doesn't suddenly make you into an anti=semite. No matter how drunk I got, I wouldn't start running around using the "N" word or gay bashing (to use a more currently relevant reference), or anything I didn't already feel. Likewise, if you already knew me, and then I got drunk and started suddenly yelling about those fucking asshole Republicans, that bitch Ann Coulter, or how the scrub was such a moron looser, than you would probably have no clue I had even been drinking!

It's going to be interesting to see how Mel tries to rehabilitate his career or if he takes his millions and heads off into retirement.

EVEN when I was worshiping the porcelain throne, I painfully remembered kneeling and reciting all of the usual mantras like: "I swear I will never blah, blah, blah,...(fill in the blanks)". I have passed out drunk before, but that was in my bed and I still remember getting there and everything that led up to that. Like you, I know I have never done anything while drunk that I would otherwise find abhorrent. As far as I will go is to say that on a couple of occasions, alcohol has magically transformed a couple of dogs into some foxes.....but other than that.....

LOL. All it takes is a frame of reference.

You know...for what it's worth, I think the fickle public would forget Mel's gaffe and forgive. It's more the powerbrokers and studio execs who won't, and who will ultimately decide his fate. NOT a smart thing to do.

I can only go by my own experience. No matter how drunk I have been (and there have been a few major binges), I feel fully responsible for what I have done and what I have said. I don't believe that peoples basic beliefs or desires change while under the influence. I do think that inhibitions tend to disappear when drinking heavily.

Thankfully, I am unable to drink to excess anymore. I get a massive headache long before I get drunk. Besides, they say that alcohol kills brain cells. And I need both of them!

Sony pictures has announced that they are staying with his new Apocalypso (sp) movie. No surprise there, they are already under contract and they are already heavily invested. But ABC has canceled his mini-series on the holocaust. Oh duh! Now that's a no brainer! This just in: the Israelis are canceling his contract as their new public relations spokesman. Shocking ain't it?

I have turned into such a light weight myself these days. I'm down to two or three drinks a week and even then, one beer and I got to go take a nap. Kinda embarrassing! And I really enjoy a good drink, especially my new special- mango margarita. So yummy!

"Both of them" huh?
Hey if you are doing this good with only two of them, you could get by just fine with only one!
