Never too old to make mistakes

I think in the past two weeks or so I have made more social blunders than I care to count.

* Let's see... I invited a very nice lady out for dinner with me then allowed her to pay for her portion. (Oy!)

* I asked a personal friend to go out on a limb and "pitch" a business opportunity to a famous friend of hers on my behalf without ensuring that she was comfortable doing so. (Haven't spoken to her since.)

* I showed up six hours late to a party. Granted, it was supposed to last from 2 p.m. till midnight, but by the time I arrived everyone already knew each other and they were already too drunk to bother talking to me.

* I extended a lunch date into a shopping date. We had fun, but it lasted a bit long for a second date. (Haven't heard from her since, of course.)

* I kissed someone on the cheek when kissing her on the mouth would likely have expressed my intentions a bit better.

Here's something I think I did right but it seemed to backfire regardless: At the above-named party I found myself particularly attracted to one young woman. I'd already noticed her on a dating website and we'd communicated a bit so I was already looking forward to meeting her. Anyway, by the time I arrived at the party (six hours late) she seemed to have already made a... friend, so my interest may have been intrusive, I wasn't sure. I guess I came on a bit strong, but my interest in her was sincere. I haven't heard from her, so I'm assuming I put her off.

Live and learn, I guess. I hope this week goes better.
