Ignorance is bliss.

A cliché that like many has a deeper meaning than the one commonly ascribed to it. On my trip to California last week I was able to see my little brother. He has an IQ somewhere north of 160 and is Gay. He also has a self destructive streak that has seen him in rehab at least twice in his 31 years. It has also been instrumental in his acquiring an HIV positive status. Since he is 15 years my Jr and we have different fathers we did not grow up together. He came out to the family when he was 16. With the exception of his redneck stepfather everybody took it in stride and tried to continue on with an increased empathy for the difficult path that often comes with the gay lifestyle. He came to spend his last year of high school with me as a step toward his total freedom. He was a product of advanced placement courses from a very early age that had him reading Shakespeare in 4th grade and Voltaire in 6th along with college level calculus. By the time he graduated he had a college level education in Science, Math and the humanities. He only needed to choose a vocation and apply his mind to it. I often wonder if his spending his formative years reading and understanding the great minds of the ages left him ill equipped for dealing with a world filled with lesser minds. Now 13 years, multiple rehabs and a impending death sentence later he is broke but sober and keeper of the wisdom required to see his faults and plot a course to overcome them. He knows I'm here for him and I wish him the peace he seeks. Maybe ignorance really is bliss.

Sometimes I think ignorance is bliss but its not. My brother is gay too and thats hard enough. Now my son is highly intelligent like your brother, so man I can just imagine the struggles he has, but it problay means the world to him that you care.

Thanks dear! It is a double whammy. You see super intelligent people all the time who are really off the deep end, like bobby fisher. I meant to add in the post that somewhere awhile back I read an article that said the average IQ in the gay community was 12 pts higher than that of the community at large. I wonder how much effect that has on their happiness. I know that I am some 30 pts below my brother but still often take for granted things that seem obvious to me and get easily frustrated at times when others do not follow....
