Ya got to know your limitations...

The sun had just risen in this quaint little village in northern Norway. It was February, we were on a NATO exercise and billeted in this sort of community center. So we decided to get in some cross country skiing in before we began our schedule for the day...

We geared up, waxed up and headed for the door. A mere fraction of a second after walking out the door, about a dozen school aged kids pelted us with a full-on barrage of snowballs, dashing from one hide to another and just screeching with laughter.

So... being the well trained and decidedly aggressive group of Marines we were, we charged our ambush returning volley after blistering volley back at our attackers.

After we lost that battle... I know, I know... but in our defense, these kids had been conducting snowball warfare since before birth. They were GOOD!

So after we'd skulked off to change out of our wet clothes... These kids offered to tour us around the village and we accept graciously, looking forward to an enjoyable morning of leisure before our operations began.

The tour eventually wound up at the school yard. I say yard because I'm sure that there surely must be some hardy bits of grass tenuously clinging to life on this near vertical hill face into which the school had been blasted... A hill face that, during the brief summer, had ski jumps built into it.

So... these kids, aged from 15 to 4, would climb this hill and make these scorching runs ending with daunting aerials. And we... again, the testosterone laden idiots we were... all decided to give it a run too. I mean, if a bunch of kids can do it, if a FOUR year old can do it... Yeah, right...

I came speeding down this hill. I hit the end of that jump. My skis never touched the bottom of the hill but pretty much all of the front of me did.

And a month later, I finally got that cast for my broken thumb. And I haven't been on a slope since. A man's got to know his limitations
