Where did it all go astray?

So, if you've been around recently, you'll see that I've made an attempt to give you all, my loyal following, a meager taste of my babies... The underwater koi-cam project.

And as a project, I have failed it (and you) miserably. Here's why...

See, I took for granted that people with my interests in koi would actually know what they were talking about. That a koi dealer would have done sufficient research on a product to fully assess it's suitability and quality for the specific application.

Enter "the dealer". An on-line entity who sells koi, koi care, aquatic plants and yes, "waterproof" closed circuit TV systems. This dealer even has a couple cameras set up and streaming in her own personal koi pond.

So, says naive me, lets do that in the ByteChaser pond and invite all the finest internet denizens to come party in peace at "Da Koi Cam".

I got myself a small four camera video server with a built in web interface. I got a dynamic DNS entry, and of course got one of these "waterproof" cameras.

I should have seen the graffiti on the overpass when the servers documentation (a Chinese product) was literally written by someone who had only a cursory fluency in english. I swear it was pigeon all the way...

I should have stopped in place and done some research. I should have delegated research to my children, perhaps pressed one or two of you into service... I should have managed this little hobby project just as I would have any work program - as though a budget and continued employment - dare I admit... ones very livelihood - depended on it's success.

Not impulsive me... NOOOOoooo... I had to have it now. I had to cut corners...

Then the camera set arrived. Now, a smart man would have questioned the "waterproof" claim and tested it off-line and un-powered. You know... just in case the production staff were smoking crack the day they assembled this particular device...

Not impulsive me... NOOOOoooo... I had to have it now. I had to cut corners...

Well, it worked for a while. all afternoon the day it arrived, through the night but alas, by morning it had gone all fuzzy. Checking the lens, I found it had a significant amount of water vapor on it... It leaked.

Sigh...

I expect there's a reason for a warranty... and for the admonitions that the customer NOT attempt to repair a defective device... A smart man would have boxed the thing up and sent it back to be replaced...

Not impulsive me... NOOOOoooo... I had to have it now. I had to cut corners...

Long story short, it eventually leaked so badly that in the end, the water shorted out the CCD, rendering this hundred odd dollar camera useless.

Next round, before I drop any more money on a video system, it's all research... it's about quality, it's about pride in workmanship, it's about equipment that actually works as advertised and that can be used by a semi-conscious house cat.

Next round, I'm treating this project as though my very existence hangs in the balance.

UPDATE
-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-

So, the person who sold me this camera has been daily asking that I return the thing to her... for replacement. Even if I did want to put this particular brand of camera back in the pond (which I dont), it's made it's way to the county dump by now I'm sure. Along with that video server.

I spent all day yesterday speaking with various manufacturers and wholesalers grilling them on thier camera and server products. It was a close call on the camera choice but I'm pretty sure I chose the best quality setup for the price. All the components are being shipped today.

Sorry... but I'm not publishing the streams until I've done a day or two of testing though I may press one or two of you into this test process - just to make sure all the kinky little details are worked out.

Then it was a lesson well learned. (If it was me, I'd probably do the same damn thing again)

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

Well, now... I'll admit that my want for your obvious joy was a significant contributing factor in the whole "hurry up and get it done" syndrome, I still take the lions share here. I should have kept my mouth shut until I knew everything was working perfectly.

We'll get it right next time babe.

Hon, I'm just glad your koi didn't get electrocuted! They are lovely to watch.

Me TOO! That though occurred to me too so I did a little checking... The line was 12VDC at .2 amps which is certainly enough to cause a human heart to stop (the amps as thats what kills), never mind a relatively fragile koi heart. But because the system didn't have a direct path to ground through the pond water, it was contained inside the camera. Thankfully, the danger was near zero...

But still... It'd break more than one heart if they were killed by some quality control eff-up.

And your so right, they are simply mesmerizing to watch

I'm just happy it's not just me... I mean, I KNOW I'm impulsive and prone to the blurt syndrome and all... But at least I know it's not some Genetic deformity... The human condition maybe?
