Terrorfied yesterday, pissed last night, sad today

So, yesterday afternoon, I'd stepped out on my back patio to have a smoke and sit next to my new koi pond. I'd had plans to finish up the landscaping around it with a pair of Princess Palms and various ground cover creepers... It was not to be.

About 40 yards into the open field behind the house, I saw a column of flame and smoke. What I'd been fearing for years since moving in here has finally come to pass. Brush fire...

I have no doubt at all that some local kids had been behind the boulder doing bong hits or god only knows what else and managed to light the creosote brush on fire. And rather than at least trying to put it out, the bastards took off at a run past my fence.

By the time I'd called 911 and turned on the lawn sprinklers in the back yard, the fire had grown from about a 10' X 10' area to a few hundred square yards and was dangerously close to my fence.

It took the fire department about seven minutes to arrive on the scene (and about 2 minutes for half the neighborhood to show up...). By now, one of the most picturesque live oaks had gone up like it were soaked in gasoline.

The fire crew (2 pumpers and 3 tankers) had the beast under control in just a few minutes, but not before the fire had scorched my beautiful backyard view. It's pretty much gone now. We'll loose an oak tree and the quail will (if they survived) need a new home.

And the whole neighborhood reeks of burnt garbage...

If there's a silver lining to this grey storm cloud, it's that we now have a 300 yard firebreak now. We'll have little fire risk come summer.

I feel bad for the wildlife. I'm sure the majority survived and they won't have to go far for new shelter, but they shouldn't have had to move out... Certainly not for the thoughtless, careless acts of a few brain-dead teens.

To tillerbabe, my thanks to you and your ilk the world over. It takes a truly heroic person to chase the beast into it's own lair. I've been burnt... it fuckin HURTS - for weeks. I'd sooner eat a bullet than burn again. It truly amazes me that there are those brave firefighters who would race into the middle of a blaze on my behalf. Thank you!

Ah hun, I'm sorry this happened and I share your pain and frustration. Hopefully nature will fill in the charred area soon and the wildlife you enjoy can move back in.

We need to exchange pics of our koi ponds! I love mine..it's so relaxing.

Hi Katey,

It's days like yesterday that also give me a greater appreciation for really big rattle snakes. Least they can maintain the teenager population...

Hey Caressme - I ordered 10 pounds of poppy seeds last night. That should help fill in a little and give the animals something to eat for a while...

I got a couple pictures of the pond somewhere around... I'll see if I can find em for ya

Grateful that you and yours are safe, byte!!

and sorry you had to experience that..
also sorry for the wildlife..and the loss...
fires are not fun when one is in the middle of them like that..
and the aftermath can be challenging...

agreed about Tiller and all of the firefighters on
the planet...it is a not an easy job...

Just a little food for thought.............
If you really want to be happy, nobody can stop you...

I hate fire play - or I guess more accurately I hate being burned. Something so descriminate as this just makes me want to choke the ever-lovin shit out of the first kid I see walking into that field...

What a complete waste.

Hi Diggs - Good thing it was winter. If it had been in the summer, I imagine every house on the block would have gone up in flames...

Thanks Goddess. I'm still pretty sad but at least I'm over wanting to break something... We will all march on and try to make it right. Neighbors and I are all pitching in on seed and seeder plants to help cover the ground till nature gets her feet planted again.

Well, damn. Sorry that you have lost that part of the nature around you. It will be interesting to see what is reborn in its place. A choking liscence should be immediately issued.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience with fire Byte, I know how lovely it can be to have a gorgous view out the backyard to relax to... I miss mine very much (sold the house when I divorced). Good for you, ordering seed and looking forward... before you know it, it will be beautiful again and you will have the satisfaction of knowing you had a hand in bringing it back.

Apparently the depth of depravity here is bottomless... don't you feel right at home?

Hi Peach - The poppy seed should arrive today and one of the neighbors has a dozen or so bay trees and sage bushes already. Looks like a planting party this weekend

Morning feisty - In time, I'm sure it'll be back to it's natural self. Good news though... the hawks survived fine and looks like their nest is in tact. Hopefully the poppies will bring in the field mice so their chicks have food come spring.

I'm so sorry.. loss like this is so very unecessary. I am glad that you and your property are safe though. Know that nature returns stronger than before, the beauty will come back. {=}
