So... This is gonna be a short one. I've got to be in San Diego to deal with a personnel issue today. One of my people has been winding up the rumor mill and causing no small measure of hate and discontent these last few days. So, it appears it's time for me to take off my "Man of the People" hat and strap on my "Inflexible, Hard-Ass" helmet. I hate being a hard-ass...

Here's the readers digest. I have this person, a woman. She's generally a good worker. Intelligent and proficient in her daily duties. She's been working in the group for a little over a year and doing a fine job. "Meeting expectations" kind of performance.

Anyway, her last manager's performance review reflected, as far as I see it, just that. She's meeting the expectations set by the leadership of the team. And she's got this chip on her shoulder because she didn't get a merit increase in her pay... and convinced her last manager (He's now my manager...) was "blind" to her accomplishments and has some issue with her such that he wont give her this monitary recognition she feels she rates.

In the Marines, we had a name for people like this. "Badge Hunter". Those people who did what was required, occasionally excelled at one mission or another but as a rule "met expectations". These were the same people who would whine and complain when someone else in the unit received an award or promotion for exceeding expectations and consistently excelling.

These Badge Hunters did the job expecting recognition and reward, not for the love of doing the job well.

That a person is disgruntled about not getting recognition for their performance is one thing, complaining about it to any who happens to pass by is a different story... And "bashing" their leaders is wholey unacceptable in my opinion.

So now, barely a few weeks after having been recognized for my own accomplishments with this promotion... I get to play the surgeon and excise this rumor-tumor from my team - one way or the other - and in the most expeditious manner possible.

Good thing I'm an asshole...

Be firm and clear in what you expect and what will happen if she does't meet it, but try to find another badge that might get her attention. For example, even though it's a merit increase that she wants, it usually isn't entirely about money. Find one of her strengths, come up with an expectation based on it (something that would bring her sincere praise and accolades if she acheived it) and see if you can get her to focus wanting that. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it works, it can turn a pain in the butt into something of a leader. And if it doesn't, then dump her ass.

(Most of my adult working life was spent in MGT, including both Ops and HR, so this is a very cathartic post for me, lol)

Hi wahine. HR and OPS? you've just become my newest, bestest friend!

Unfortunately with her, it wasn't about doing the job well, it's about her inability to perform without expectation of reward. In this team, one can't badge-hunt... We're 37 forward thinkers and innovators. One thought, one vision, one voice. Every one of them excels far beyond any reasonable expectation and frankly it takes extraordinary, nearly Herculean effort (and results) to be recognized above the rest.

The team gets recognized in one way or another when the team succeeds beyond expectations and those one or two truely stellar contributors get that extra bit of validation...

Her problem, and one I think she and I have embarked to resolve, is that while working for other companies she was "the Golden Child", around here, it's the expected norm...

We just need to shift her need for validation from individual to team. And while we're at it, see if we can develop the tools for her to become one of those relative few who're individually recognized.

Go ahead...be a hardass. It works for me. If course...I don't really ever stop being one to those that get on my shit list...but hey...enjoy it. After this is over...you will go back to sweet and innocent-never hurts anyone guy. Enjoying being bad while you can.

Shudder* I dont envy you this ...some folks only do well & become 'golden' only when they compete against less talented coworkers. Drop them into a world of equals or superior performers? They dont amp it up & rise to the task...they just complain about how nobody "gets" them...that everyone fails to see their superior genius. yuk...strap on that helmet! I suspect you're gonna need it
