$500.00 bucks!!

For those of you who have been reading my blog regularly, you already know that I am challenged in several areas of my life. Directions being one of those. On Friday another challenged area of my life cropped up to be a nuisance.

It has been extremely hot here in Texas. For several days we have been experiencing a heat wave with temperatures soring into the 100's and higher. The Heat Index has also been very high and the weather man has also started giving daily warning about the Heat Index.

If you are like me, you haven't a clue as to what the Heat Index is. I did a Google search and this is what I discovered. The Heat Index (H I ) is the temperature the body feels when heat and humidity are combined. When heat and humidity combine to reduce the amount of evaporation of sweat from the body, outdoor exercise becomes dangerous even for those in good shape. Key rules for coping with heat are to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and to slow down and cool off when feeling fatigued, a headache, a high pulse rate or shallow breathing. Overheating can cause serious, even life-threatening conditions such as heat stroke. The apparent temperature, which combines the temperature and relative humidity, is a guide to the danger (see chart below)

Category Apparent temperature Dangers

Caution 80-90蚌 Exercise more fatiguing than usual

Extreme caution 90-105蚌 Heat cramps, exhaustion possible

Danger 105-130蚌 Heat exhaustion likely

Extreme danger Greater than 130蚌 Heat stroke imminent

Last week we had several days of 100 degree temperatures and even 104. That is very hot. But, what made it so bad is the HI has been listed as over 100%. There is a formula that meteorologists use to calculate the heat index. It is too complicated for me to try to explain it here. Maybe there is another Blogger on this site who could do that for ya if your are interested. I'll just say that on Friday it was 104 and the heat index was listed as 115%.

This is where the challenged part comes into the picture. I am a seriously Electronically Challenged person. I just do not understand how all these electronic gadgets work. For instance, I have had a cell phone for three months now and I still can't figure out how to listen to my voice messages. I have a wonderfully programmable VCR/DVD player, but every time I try to set it to turn on and record a certain show on t.v. I am often surprised with what show I end up recorded.

I do notice when things just don't "sound" right or "work right" And I kept telling hubby that something was the matter with the air conditioner as the house did not seem to be getting cool and the unit seemed to be running all the time. He said he thought it was the thermostat going out and replaced it last Friday.

The house was still not getting cooled. So, this Friday at 4:00 p.m when he finally went to check the outside unit, smoke was coming out of it. of course he immediately turned it off and called a repair man. The repair man came out at 5:30 and ended up replacing the motor of our unit. Because it was the weekend and after 5:00 p.m. by the time the repairman could make it out to our house, we ended up paying $500.00 plus dollars to get it fixed!! There went the money we had put aside to buy an above ground pool. I will have to find another way to cool off in this heat.

It wouldn't have been so costly if we had set up the appointment for the repairman to come out before 5:00 p.m. We would have saved even more money if the repairman had not had to come out on a weekend. I was in shock at the repair cost but, we have to have an air conditioner. Just in the short hour and a half we waited for the repairman to arrive the temperature in the house rose to 93 degrees. I don't know how people survive with out air condtioning.

As I sweated and waved my paper fan, waiting for the repairman to fix the air conditioner, I realized how thankful and fortunate I am to have air conditioning and to be able to afforded to have it fixed. There are so many people, elderly, homeless and others who can not afford to have air conditioning. I am indeed a blessed person to enjoy the comforts I have.

How do you stay cool in the summer? How have you been blessed? Do you feel grateful and fortunate
to have the things you do?

    Quoting __JVT__:
BD...I grew up in an old farmhouse that didn't have A/C. My dad refused to buy a window unit because he didn't want to pay the extra for the electricity it would use.

It wasn't long after I moved out of the house that my parents finally broke down and bought a window AC unit that was big enough to cool the entire bottom floor of the house. lol

I have worked outside year around for the majority of my life, so being out in the heat is something I am used to. I just make sure I am smart about it. I always have a jug of ice water with me and usualy a couple bottole of Gatorade. I am not ashamed to sit down in the shade for a bit if I need to.

Having said that...there is NO WAY I am giving up my central air!!! lol

As I always remind myself...it could always be worse. Take care...

    JVT
JVT, when I was growing up in Iowa, no one had air conditioners. They were not needed.

At least you are taking care of yourself in the heat JVT.

*BIP ya cause I feel like it..

It's been humid enough to be uncomfortable here. I keep the A/C on all day. Luckily, I work at night so I deal with only the humidity and not the sun beating down on my head. The flightline has a tendency to be 20+ degrees hotter than elsewhere. Our dispatch trucks drive around with big Gatorade jugs of water and whatnot.

Drinking plenty of fluids in hot weather is very important. Humidity can cause headaches. That might be what is causing yours. Take care of yourself.
