Where Did the TIME Go?

Journal Entry March 25, 2006. Where Did the Time Go?

“Time waits for no man, no favors has he.
Time waits for no one. And it won’t wait for me…”
--Rolling Stones, Time

Usually, someone has to die for me to have a sense of my mortality. I get all philosophical for a day or two, then go back to the grind. But sometimes, a little thing can happen that jerks me out of my rush-rush life and makes me think about my limited time here.

Time is a funny thing. No one has really proven the existence of time. Sure, science can measure rocks spinning around suns, and we can divide that up into smaller and smaller chunks and organize around it, and build cool devices like computers and stuff. And we can watch the sun come up and go down and put numbers on it. But really, what does it mean? If we’re having fun and pleasure, time flies. If we’re suffering, time drags. And so forth.

Raising kids has really fucked with my mind when it comes to time. My oldest is now 23, and the other two are 21 and 19. I remember taking them skiing when they were tiny. They don’t ski now (too cold Dad!), but they do know how and I’m sure they’ll get into it again eventually. Since I’m between contracts at the moment, I decided to do some mid-week skiing this week. On Thursday I went to Breckenridge and hit the slopes when the lifts opened. I skied really hard all morning, did a bunch of bump runs, then stopped for lunch. I got a healthy chili dog, and a lovely 1554 brew, and sat down outside to people-watch while I carb’d up for the afternoon.

I looked over the rail, and a tiny little girl came skiing up. She had on a pink snow suit with flowers, matching goggles and helmet, and bright day-glow skis that couldn’t have been more than two feet long. No poles (they don’t use them that young). If she was five that would have been a stretch. She was so cute! As she skied up to the edge of the building, she was ecstatic:

“Daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy, DADDY!!! I made it all the way down, I made it all the way DOWN!!” She was beaming, as was Daddy. You know, that look of a proud Daddy who has spent thousands of dollars on equipment, clothes, tickets, condos, and who knows what else. He that look that said, “Yes, finally!” He was as beautiful as his daughter. I was choked up.

BAM, flash! My mind transported back 18 years or so, when I first got my oldest daughter on skis. I remembered the first time she made it all the way down. Was that REALLY 18 years ago? WHERE DID THE TIME GO? I don’t feel any older. Sure, things have changed I suppose, but is my baby girl really 23? It seems like yesterday…

If 20 years can fly by so quickly, how much longer do I really have here? Not long. Not long at all. Here’s what I’m gonna do today:

1. Call my mom, and plan a visit to see her. She’s 70 now. It won’t be long.
2. Call my daughters and really TALK to them.
3. Call my siblings.
4. Appreciate nature.
5. Quiet down, so I can feel the divine presence running through me.
6. Be a little kinder.
7. Go to lunch. And have a beer when I do.
8. Talk to my neighbor about fixing the fence.

I mean really, what could be more important than that? Here’s what I’m NOT gonna do today: work on something I don’t enjoy. And whatever I do, I’ll take my TIME.

Love & Light,

“And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around, to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to DEATH.
“The time is gone, the song is over. Thought I’d something more to say.”
--Pink Floyd

I'm glad to see you posting here again - I was afraid your blog had gone dark for a bit and it's one of my favorites in Colorado or elsewhere. It was this blog and redhead351970's that persuaded me to pick up the habit of writing one.

Was it only yesterday they glowed with delight, ever so proud of their accomplishments...mastering those first steps, learning to tie their shoes, first bike rides without training wheels, rollerblades...Was it only yesterday they suckled my breasts?

Slow down, enjoy, smell the roses. Most of us need to. Know I do.
Make the most of the love and the light and the passion in your life.
Slowly and with pleasure.

Ironic. Heard this on the radio this morning...haven't been able to get it out of my head all day.

Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him,
Take your time, it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
Joni Mitchell

As always, big hugs and sweet kisses for you, G.

Thanks my friend. That's why it's good to write, so the memories don't fade. Or like some wise guy says, "I use memories, I don't allow memories to use me." In other words, remember the good things and forget about the bad.
