Amateur Music Critics - Don't let yourself be one!!

The other day I was sitting on the train heading to my Spring class when I overheard some obnoxiously loud people talking at the far end of the train. The couple were young, probably still in high-school and they were discussing the usual, skateboarding and music.

I tried to ignore them, but then the guy went into the girls purse and found the new Nick Lachey CD (What's Left of Me). He laughed and asked her if she was 14. She told him to shut up "because he's hot." The guy then agreed but said "yeah but he can't sing."

This is why I'm writing. It pisses me off how people criticize singers of other genres. First off this is a major lack of respect, both for the artist, as well as for all their fans. Anyone who has listened to Nick Lachey sing knows he is an amazing vocalist. His music helped me get through an extremely tough time in my own life and since then I've been a HUGE fan. His voice is great "by the book" and he also inspired me to follow my own singing aspirations.

Objectively though, it really isn't fair for anyone to pass judgement on any sort of music. I don't mind when someone says "I don't like that" or "I think it's crap" but when someone says "He can't sing", that thoroughly pisses me off. Who is to say who can and can't sing?? It could be your opinion that a rapper is a singer, or that he/she is a poet. It could also be your opinion that alot of loud screaming (which I personally don't find catchy or good) is singing. Everyone's definition of music and what constitutes "good" singing is different and I just wish that everyone else felt the same way.

In the end, I guess that's just too much to ask.
