Swapping out active poll table for something different

As we moved the active polls table to magazine last week or so, I'm going to replace it with the more active posts that are less that 2 weeks old. As I don't know how the databases will hold up, the first version will sort based on the # of comments (later it will be the number of commentors). Hopefully, this will help people to more easily find the buzz on the site.

I *might* later add a way to view the most recently commented posts (but a new commentor) so we can see which are the posts that are getting the most post action.

it would be better, if things just worked. (with or without the bells and whistles.)

Tell me your top 5 things to fix in blogs? We have about 15 changes being worked on related to performance of other parts of the site (a big redesign of the backend of the friends network and groups - should be faster and more useful).

Long-time blogger, first time caller returning after a 5 month hiatus. I appreciate the feedback and have to say the blog
site has improved tremendously. A few quirks remain including ...

I began blogging signed up from one geographical location only to change locations within my profile. The blog geography did not follow suit.

The Recent Post page routinely updates 30 or more blogs at a time where there are only 25 slots. Any chance the list capacity could be expanded to 30? Would that help?

Andrew replies on 4/9/2006 7:20 pm:
Interesting that the location didn't change when you changed. One of the projects this week is to make the "Browse by Location" to immediately go to your "region" instead of "World". I'll suggest to the developer on that to investigate changing locations.

This site has very active blogs so that posts don't stay on the main page as much. Hopefully, the new post table will help some.

As you might have read, I had to push out some other features, bug fixes, etc early tonight. I might have introduced a few new bugs especially on how posts show up based on level and ownership (was working on ways to simplify how blog counts are done). I think I got it right but you never know. Will keep an eye on things tonight.

I wish they would swap oyt "People who like this blog, also like ... "
It makes no sense and I don't endorse they other blogs on there ... maybe have it where one can choose the blogs in that catagory.

Andrew replies on 4/9/2006 9:20 pm:
Ah - that list comes from people's watched lists... means those are the blogs that people who "watch" your blog also "watch". Maybe I'll add an option for you to remove it

The biggest thing I would fix on the blogs right now, would be getting the location of blogs to update if one moves. For instance, if you browse by location, it says my blog is in CT, but I live in NY now.

Andrew replies on 4/9/2006 9:20 pm:
On my/our list.

Wow, even I understood this one! Either I am getting more savvy or it is just a glitch. I love the new search for "where i am quoted" feature and the font size and color changes. So far, so good with me!

I so want to become a paid member so I can enjoy more features. However, everytime I think I am ready to pay, something happens. Example, I was wiped out of the database, told me that I have to answer questions, then told me I was not approved yet, incorrect password when it was correct, etc.

I do have to say, that each time I had a problem, I emailed and you tech team fixed the problem. But sometimes I am locked out for a few days.

Wiped out? You mean the site or your blog?

I would like to see who "watches" my blog - self absorbed bitch that I am
Also would like a "recommended blog".

Thanks for all the finger cramps you get each day in order to make us happy (is that really possible?)

Oddly

Andrew replies on 4/10/2006 2:08 am:
Yup - thinking about at least showing how many people are "watching"... if we showed them 1) some would complain about privacy, 2) some would use it as another way to "wink"

Yeah, I have had that several times happen to me too. I thought at first I would be 'smart' and click on the forgot password thing and it would email me the same password I was just using, which I tried several times and it still didnt work, but a couple of times that it happened when you fill out the forgot password thing it will give you a message saying that your account could not be restored. Its happened to me several times over the past 3 years. But they could always restore my account when emailed right away about it.

Thanks for all your hard work but one thing I'm wondering is will we in time be able to insert a picture into our post and bigger icons?

Thanks again

They work on when you add them with a comment but not on "blog post"

You mentioned that the table would sort based on # of comments. This made me recall that when you enable "Title View" in your blog, it automatically sorts by post date. This brings to mind some functionality enhancements:

(1) Allow the user to sort the table by clicking on column headers. This would allow them to see their most popular entries (sort on comments) or the entries which received the latest comments (sort on last).

(2) Put page links at top of table as well as at bottom (this should be consistently implemented throughout the user interface).

(3) Implement cookie, stored user preference logic or something similar that keeps track of the "last state" of the blog view (either title or original view as well as the current sort preference). When you return to your blog, the last state should be displayed as the default.

Your blog site is second to none
And people like me have great fun
With posts that incite
A state of delight
In folks who love sex a whole ton...

I still have a conceptual problem with the idea that number of comments is a better measure of "popular" than the number of views. There are a lot of posts that really don't lend themselves to comments, but I read them regularly. I know some people get discouraged at the lack of comments, since that is the way we are "paid" for our writing.

You have no idea how much I enjoy this place. Thank you!
