Hundreds of volunteers stripped naked at dawn and walked through the streets of Gateshead and Newcastle

Controversial American artist Spencer Tunick cordoned off a section of the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides to create his latest piece of nude art.

Around 1500 people braved the chilly early temperatures, rough road surfaces and discarded chips from last night's revellers to take part in his largest "installation" in the country.

They included zoo-keepers, postmen, midwives and a vicar.

Tunick has already set up the world's largest nude photoshoot in 2003 when 7,000 bared all in Barcelona.

He also photographed 4,000 naked people in the centre of Melbourne and more than 500 in Selfridges, central London.

I have heard of this artist before and have a few questions.Namely:

Is this art or mass nudism/exhibitionism?
Would you?
Have you?
Should we get him to be official photographer at the convention?

Well, the whole concept of whether or not it's art is hard to argue about. After all, there are those into the concept of conceptual art. Is it art when Christo shrouds stuff in fabric? There was a piece done once where the artist dug a huge hole and then filled it again. So are 1500 naked people art? I guess it could be seen as that. Photography is seen as an artistic medium. And with that medium Tunick can capture these people's reactions to being nude in public. It can also be seen in the other light as mass nudism/exhibitionism because it is a huge gathering of naked people.

Would I? Perhaps. Depends. I don't know if I'm quite that brave yet. Would I get to see you there?

No I have not.

LOL. He's probably the perfect photographer for the convention.

I've never heard of this guy ,
but he hasn't heard of me either so we're even.

Anything is art if you call it that.
Hey! Now I know what to do with all that toe cheese I've been saving!

My personal opinion, it's just one big Nude-O-Rama.

If you haven't noticed yet, people love to take their clothes off and say "Hey! Look at my thing!"

I thought Expat was going to be the photographer.
Then again, you can't do two things at once.

It seems more sensationalism than art. This is a good expression of our culture so in that sense I suppose it can be termed art.

You should see how much he sells them for.

It is true that anything can be termed art.I do fall into the representational forms only counting as art school. But hell if some fools gonna pay you for it , who can blame him.

I was interested in if anyone had ever been part of one of his events, as he recruits everyone in the pictures online. It seems to me to be one of those things you might end up doing after agreeing to it on a drunk night out.Seems noone has or noone will admit to As for me I would consider it.

I am sure expat will be able to think of loads better ways to take pictures JayR.Only trouble is would you want to put them in a photo album after?
I'm not so sure you would, unless you are really stuck for coffee morning chit chat.

The HBO special was interesting...

Seemed to be more of a spirtual freeing your body thing for people taken than posing for art...

This took place, with some 4000 people, in of all places CLEVELAND OH last summer. Cleveland has a somewhat staid if not downright stuffy complacency that contrasted very sharply with this undertaking. Add to that the less-than-obvious attraction of downtown Cleveland architecture as backdrop, and pretty much everyone, including the participants thought the guy was not quite right in the head. I was unable to attend ... spend my summers on a military reservation here in SW OK ... but gather much of this from a local TV news reporter ... a lovely, young, svelte woman who not only participated and filmed her participation but then AIRED that on a special edition of the late news this past fall ... timed with the release of the huge mural generated from this event. That may have been more shocking to the general populace than the event itself. But is it art? I am definitely not one to judge ... but I can tell you my impression of the resultant mural as you stand diminutively before it. Here is a canvas colored by all the hues of humanity, and textured by all of its imperfections. I found myself graduating in thought from What the Hell? to tearful repose as the implications of this gathering sunk in. As an evolutionary geneticist, I more than most, know in the firmness of scientific reason how we are all of Homo sapiens sapiens and how truly artificial the distinctions of the so-called "races" of man are. But here, on a gut level that it available to the masses, was a greater proof than any discussion of DNA sequences I might provide you. And what is art if not something that can move you to change your perspective in life or reaffirm it from a completely unthought of aspect.

Is it Art? All I know is, I saw what I always knew made real.

Art or Exhibitionism?
Art, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. I see nothing more beautitul than the human body. Art of ancient Greeks
goes so far as to depict sexual positions. Is Michealangelo's statue of David art? What about a Picasso? Were their models merely exhibitionists? What of the nude model in a classroom of art students?
If I had been in Cleveland for the photo shoot I would have volunteered to be in the picture. Not because I am an exhibitionist but because Tunick's pictures are beautiful. Art feeds the human soul no matter what form it takes.

Tand J and Redlipsprincess Im afraid I dont get HBO here.Actually that may be a good thing. However there does seem to be something in the liberation experianced by naturism.I can only presume this is enhanced when partaken in such large numbers.
