Beach skills- Pt1 The Frisbee Hammer Throw.

So here it is.Apparentley this move is the ultimate head turner in the world of ultimate frisbee (yes it is actually a fully fledged sport) so may i intriduce you to the HAMMER THROW

Step1.TAKE THE STANCE
Face your target and position your feet shoulder width apart. If you are right handed, pull your right foot back slightly to create a stable base.

Step2.BEND AT THE BASE
Keep your knees slightly bent so that your body sways smoothly forward as you throw. You want to minimise side to side movement so all your power is channelled through the throw.

Step3.GET A GRIP
Hold the frisbee at eye level, not flat but perpendicular to the ground, just in front of your right eye.The top side of the frisbee should be facing you, your thumb pointing back towards your face along the outside of the rim.Your first finger on the inside pointing towards the center and your third finger on the inside of the rim to balance the hold.Keep your grip firm but relaxed.

Step4.TAKE A STEP
Initiate the throw by shifting your weight onto your left foot, them raising your right foot to step forward.Keep all your weight on the anchoring left foot that never moves.

Step5.WIND IT UP
With your throwing arm raised, bend your elbow so the frisbee is held vertically above your head. The shoulder of your throwing arm should be angled back from the intended direction of throw allowing room for your arm to accelerate.

Step6.TWIST YOUR HIPS

Power comes from the core of the body.Your hips should twist forward as your shoulder starts to move.Concentrate on transferring the energy up and through ypur body towards your wrist, like a whip cracking.

Step7.WHIP YOUR WRIST

As the power is transferred from the shoulder and arm muscles down towards the wrist, the speed of the movement increases.Think of performing a whip like action(, and keep realaxed throughout.

Step8.FEEL THE SNAP

Keep your forearm relaxed until the final moment of release, when the wrist snaps throughto impart maximum spin to the disc. The snap of the wrist creates the spin which keeps the frisbee flying straight and true for the longest distance.Your wrist should pull the frisbee slightly to the left so the angle of release starts to level it upside down.

Right so now you have read that there is no excuse.I must give thanks to the ultimate frisbee association for the instructions. If any of you are further interested on a more serious level under look ultimate frisbee on the web.It looks to be a fun sport which is truely equal for both sexes and ages.

Good luck with the practising!

my knees ache, I end up with my right thumb on my eye, my hips are sore and my back is in pain, never realized frisbee can be such an extreme sport
can we not play twister? or football? or rugby?

It was easier with the pictures.Blame FF for not letting me use them.Lets try it if I come behind you and move you through the action with my hand on your waist.

Doggie style!.I think you have the hip movement wrong. It says bend at the knees , not bend over.Come over here with coff and I and I am sure we will get the hang of it by the end of the season.........I mean session.

Katey

Can you help me teaching then.Looks like I dont have enough hands to go round. Then you can explain the frisbee golf concept to dz and I down the 19th.

Starlight Socialite

Yep thats fine mighty fine, and the throws not bad either .lol

JayR

Do you always talk in riddles.Always love the comments, but have no idea what they mean!

Dz

Once again an excellent idea throwing little plastic discs around is very draining. One condition though I get first pick on the two blondes..........
