News of the World 12

The Isles of Scilly are most commonly associated with sandy beaches, a mild climate and a life of tranquillity.

But today 11 women will suffer the embarrassment of being flown by helicopter from the island of St Mary's to the mainland to identify their stolen underwear and sex aids while giving evidence to Truro crown court in Cornwall.

The accused in the case, Andrew Stephan, 41, a builder on St Mary's, which is part of the archipelago of rocky islands and islets 28 miles off Land's End on the most south-westerly point of Britain, denies 16 charges of burglary, four of theft and one of witness intimidation over a 15-year period from 1989 to January 2004.

Iain Leadbetter, prosecuting, told the court yesterday that the witnesses had agreed to testify against Mr Stephan despite their "considerable embarrassment".

He said: "For many of these women, it was extremely embarrassing to tell the police, 'Oh, by the way, that's my vibrator.' You can imagine the embarrassment that they all felt the moment that this can of worms opened."
