Got one! First try lands a winner!

Damn, the email got deleted by the system so I can't post it for you.

If you have been keeping up with my blog you know that I spend most of the time I am logged in to this site (not blogging) looking at completely phony profiles. Not because I want to, but because there appears to be no effort at all spent on preventing creation of bullshit profiles by con-men that are used only to lure people in to giving up their personal email addresses for marketing purposes, or worse. Nearly every one I click on is fake. And I fucking hate it. I paid to join this site and it is totally unusable in the current state. People are creating fake profiles to scam you! Best part is it is probably all dudes, and likely off in some foreign country.

I recently made the (poor) decision to just start picking profiles I am sure are fake and fucking with them. I can at least then get the minor joy of clicking the abuse link.

So I sent candidate number one a message titled "Hi", with a single sentence body as follows: "phishing for a scam, baby!"

A message came back, titled, "Hey it's Lauren, just wanted to say hi!!!" I say a message, not a reply, because it wasn't one. It is a prefabbed answer that the scammmer sends to everyone who sends an email. The body of it was something along the lines of "I looked at your profile and loved your eyes, blah blah, do me, do me." Bullshit! Now I do have pictures with my eyes visible in my profile, but a standard member cannot see them, as far as I know. The key point of the scam is that it immediately gave a real Internet email address that the user wanted me to use. Okay, why?

What they are up to is stealing email addresses for some illegal purpose. Either to spam you with something, or lure you in to another website that will get you to enter a credit card or personal identification to supposedly see something more about the fake member that has lured you in. I suppose there are an endless number of possible scams. Either way, they are using this system to fuck people over. And probably just men, because we are stupid and gullible. Apparently women are not suffering the same fate.

I have never used any of these addresses, but I am getting curious as to what exactly they are up to. I found an unused email address that I have on one of the free email services that I might start using to contact these members. Curiosity might kill this cat.

Candidate 2 got:
"O RLY?
Right! What are you selling?
You are going to have to try harder than that!"

Waiting for a reply on that one...

I've been thinking about what my next attempts should be. Should I get more obnoxious, or would I then be considered an abuser myself? Maybe I will have to make a poll to get votes on the best way to harass them.

So, what do you think?

I'm not complaining about you or any other legitimate member who chooses to lie in their profile. That's fine. The point is there are scammers using fake profiles to lure people in to get robbed or abused in some way. And there are thousands of them. I am willing to bet that it is a significant percentage of all profiles. They turn over rapidly and make new ones as soon as one gets shut down.

It may not be happening to women, but it is a real problem for men. It is so widespread that it is nearly impossible to use the site for the function it was designed. As a paying member (I paid to turn off the ads) I am upset that I am not able to use the product I paid for. I am not looking down on standard members at all. My complaint is for management, and to all the asshole con-men abusing the system.

If you have not seen it, change your profile to man looking for woman and go look at a dozen or so of the "user is online" or "new matches". I guarantee at least one of them is fake, probably 5. Email them all with some random bullshit and see how many reply asking for you to email them somewhere else or to give them your email.
