A reminder of what lurks inside

The weight of the world all resting atop his shoulders, he rose his head to look out at the vast space in front of him. A torrent of hellfire enough to blind a man with his eyes closed. He turned in a circle to view all that was around him. Tendrils of smoke that shifted into the distorted shapes of humans, screaming with the torture of the lives they are living and the lives they had lived in the past. Pain had become second nature to him, so looking down to see his feet beginning to burn didn't shock him. The pain of the fire was different, it wasn’t the burn of heat, but the burn of loss. The loss of life in his veins, the loss of sanity, the loss of happiness. He began to walk towards the mountainous walls of nothingness surrounding the pit. He couldn’t see anything holding him in this pit, but he knew something was there. As he was walking the fire slowly rose from his feet to consume him. He could feel something in him trying to get him to return to the spot he had left. The fire began to change. It began burning like ice freezing around him as he moved closer to the wall. The burn changed from the feeling of loss to the feeling of desperation. Desperation of a sort, he wasn’t sure what he was desperate for, but a definite desperation. In the clouds above he could see eyes staring at him. All different sizes, all different colors, winking in and out as he stepped. Each and every one pried at him, picked apart his every move, reading his soul…judging his every decision. Each eye seemed familiar, like he had seen them before, as if he knew them. It wasn’t important, those eyes appeared every time he came here. As he moved closer to the wall he began to realize that the other side held to key to releasing him from his prison. He moved closer to the wall and hope began to extinguish the burn. Pain became a distant memory, he could feel nothing else but hope. Without warning the ground began to give way to an endless chasm…of what he wasn’t sure. The space around him was black as far as he could tell, but it wasn’t the combination of all the colors, black. It was the lack of everything, black. He let the bleakness wash over him as he closed his eyes. The next few minutes were a blur. The curiosity of what was happening around him drove him to open his eyes. He found himself staring into his notebook, beneath his hood, with the teacher lecturing in front of him. He managed to escape into his own little world quite frequently these days, but each time he went now the environment became more and more treacherous. He could only imagine what the next visit would be like…he grimaced, and decided not to think about it until he let his mind wander again.
