Performing

I had a performance yesterday evening of a Brian Friel play. I love his writing. It's very full of wonderful images and is amazingly articulate. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is just how much energy it takes to perform. I'm an actor by trade and training and I'm working on building those sort of muscles. We only performed for an hour (first act only), but what a workout. My character was onstage for all but 5 minutes of that and I was exhausted afterwards. It takes incredible concentration and energy, both mentally and physically, to maintain a detailed and varied performance. I love being that alive and responsive. One of the reasons why I love acting. It also gives me a greater appreciation for the really good actors. This is why actors are worth the money they get paid. In theory anyway. There are far too many personalities out there instead of skillful craftsmen. Anyway, just thought I'd share some of my ideas on the topic.
