 I succumbed to a very inappropriate temptation once. I felt awful about it for a long time, but I've mellowed over the years, and now I feel a bit ambivalent about the whole thing.

 I liked your take on Inappropriate Temptations. I think my take on it was weak, but I tried.

For me an inappropriate temptation would be breaking my own rules- going out with a 20something, having sex with a married man who was going behind his wife's back, having sex with my ex.

Food for thought, eh?

 inappropriate temptations....hmm wow, a hard topic. I watch porn and some of the porn you find on the internet can be inappropriate..and I get tempted to watch...and all I can say is how weird or gross, but I keep on watching....slightly aroused and amazed!

 Hmmm. What makes one temptation inappropriate and another appropriate? I don't think there is a clear line there because what is appropriate or not usually is in the mind of the tempted. I'm tempted to have the cheese cake after dinner. Not so bad, most would say. I'm tempted to beat the living shit out of that smart-assed youngster tormenting my cat. Maybe closer to inappropriate, but I'm not sure. If you are tempted to have sex with children, that is clearly inappropriate by almost any standard. And these are all from the view through my own widow. Your view will vary.

 You may have had a difficult time with the topic, but your end result rose admirably to meet the challenge!

Your scenarios offer a lot of food for thought about the nature of inappropriateness: Temptation is what it is, but I see temptation as a neutral term. There's a world of difference between going for that slice of cheesecake (literal cheesecake, not metaphorical cheesecake) and murder.

As for handing your number to the painter at the office... I'm torn. On the one hand, my own post on this subject deals with a woman at a conference who was made very, very uncomfortable by just such a scenario. But that scenario involved a more-explicit solicitation that just handing someone a phone number.

On the other, people do ask each other out -- for a variety of purposes -- all the time.
