Time Zoned

For the first time in many, many, years, I actually got my clock adjusted to Eastern Time after a trans-continental flight. It was not without some discomfort.

I grew up here in then east, and one of the things that you notice when you grow up here (especially in the Washington, DC area) and then move away is that the country marches to Eastern Time, and if you live in a different time zone, you're mentally adjusting everything by subtracting an hour, or two, or three, or even four or five, if you live in Alaska or Hawaii. As an example, I regularly get calls on my cell phone at 5 AM on Saturday morning from people on the east coast, thinking that we're working on Eastern Time, and they have little or no idea that you're still in bed.

To get adjusted to Eastern Time from Alaska Time, I had to only drowse on the red-eye flight, rather than get a good nap in... and then when I got here, I stayed up most of the day, and then only napped for a couple hours at midday, when I couldn't keep my eyes open. I forced myself to get up, and at 9 PM (Eastern Time) I was ready to get to bed.

At 7:30 AM the next morning I was up, and in the shower, ready to do some work on my laptop (it's a working vacation). My brother and I went to the baseball game with an old friend, and then went to his place for dinner. I was getting ready for bed at about 11 PM... and my adjustment was complete.

I am self-employed, and own a small business, so I forwarded my work phone to my cell phone so that I wouldn't miss any calls. So as I was about to drift off to sleep last night, at 11:30 PM Eastern Time, the phone rings. It was a potential client, thinking that I was in Alaska!

You can't win...
