The $20 Experiment, and Your Lawn

The next time you're at the grocery store, go to the produce section. Grab a head of iceburg lettuce, and the most expensive bag of salad greens. If you're really curious, grab a head of romaine lettuce and perhaps one of those basic salad mixes. The whole thing should be less than $20.

Take them home...

In the safety of your kitchen, open them up, and put a representative sample of each on a plate, starting with the least expensive, and going up to the most expensive.

Suppose you didn't know anything about any of these, except the cost. What would you say about the collection of salad mixes? What occurs to me is, the smaller, more colorful, more serrated and textured the mixture, the more expensive it is.

Take that most expensive mix, and go outside. Notice that when you look at the designer salad greens, and compare it to the weeds in your lawn, they look alarmingly similar. Dandelions have those wonderful dark green, serrated leaves. Chickweed looks a little like frisee'. As it turns out, both are edible (but don't eat them because I told you, who knows what neighborhood dog peed on them).

So, as your neighbors employ lawn services and spread Turf Builder with weed Killers, and you feel compelled to keep up with the Joneses, put yourself in their place for a moment. In their ignorance and blind race to create the picture post card lawn, they doom themselves to iceburg. All iceburg, all the time. Bland. Watery. Shapeless. Tasteless. Iceburg.

Revel in your dandelions and chickweed. Lambs quarters may be tall, but they're tasty... and nutritious.

Salad for everyone!

Don't forget to drink the dandelion wine!

I enjoyed this post, and yes they do look similar (later in the year tho)

I must be crazy but I actually prefer Iceberg lettuce espcially
if it's chilled. I think it's because it's always jucier and crunchier. LOL

I had a salad in London that looked EXACTLY like a bunch of
weeds. Tasted bitter too. lol

We still have quite a bit of snow on the ground here, but it is disappearing rapidly... the dandelion sprouts will be appearing any time, and this time, I'll be ready for them. I remember dandelions in some sort of chicken broth when I was a kid... I'll have to find a recipe.
