The mystery of love is one of the most important mysteries we live with. Despite this, from time to time it seems amazingly simple.
Every now and again I’ve tried to write a post about what it means to be loved, and to love. I must be pretty big headed if I believe I can get it all worked out, but I’ll keep trying! This time I’m conducting a questionnaire to collect some opinions. There’s no point in only getting a few responses so this sticky post will stay at the top of my blog and provide links to the nine questions I’m asking for some time.
I wonder what you think. Please answer my questions. It won’t take a minute; you don’t have to add comments, unless you want to. When I’ve collected lots of responses I’ll summarise the results and share my findings.
first question Q2 - Q3 - Q4 - Q5 - Q6 - Q7 - Q8 - Q9

Polly.
I can't quite figure out love either. *sigh* All I know is that it feels great when both parties are well involved.

Dearest WP ~
Long Long years ago there was a course in College taught by a Prof that was a mentor to me ~ it was a two semester course and it was entitled "Love" ~ a College so large ~ and with so many people 'looking' for Love ~ yet a handful of students were all that took that course. Of course it did not give definitive answers to what it means to be loved and to love unless a student was able to first identify his/her own process of Love.
I hope you get many responses to your questions.
Hugs ~ KateyB

I answered the questions. I once read that origin of the word 'love' comes from the sanskrit word 'lobh' - which translates roughly into 'envy for something that someone else possesses'. I was a little surprised at first but upon reflection I have decided that its actually an apt meaning for our definition of love, which is rarely selfless in nature.
waggypolly replies on 11/22/2008 1:05 am: That seems to me to be a very good gloss on one way of loving. Do you know if Sanskrit has a different word for 'selfless love'? Thanks for answering. |

Nice idea for a post - I voted, but then I realized that the relevance of the answer to each question depends quite a lot on what that person has answered to the question before, and you only have the absolute numbers to go on, so it isn't going to tell you as much as you might have got out of it. But I look forward to seeing any results you do come up with.
waggypolly replies on 11/22/2008 1:06 am: Let's be frank: the design of this questionnaire stinks. But let's not be too academic. If it opens new areas for discussion it will have done it's job. Thanks for coming. |

Maybe it's because I am a bloke but I had to put nearly all of your questions in the too hard basket. For sure I could have ansered most of them if I had thought long enough and hard enough.
But then I bet if you had asked me questions about lust I would have had the all answers right off the top of my head.
Does that tell you something?

waggypolly replies on 11/22/2008 1:08 am: But I've decided I know a bit about lust and want to learn something about love before I'm too old for it all. After all, investigating love doesn't have to put a stop to the pursuit of lust, does it?
Where are you, btw? |

There is no such phrase as 'selfless love' in sanskrit. Perhaps that is telling in itself . There is 'selfless' (asvaarthin) and selflessness (nirahamkriyaa). Tellingly, both are in the feminine person.
