Blogville used to be a tiny little village where everyone loved each other.
When I first came to live here it was but two months old. I felt such a newbie; everyone else knew each other and could find their way around. I worked so hard at getting myself accepted.
Soon Blogville was a small town and I felt at home. It even had its own newspaper and elected Lady Mayoress. Everybody still knew everyone. As is the way with successful settlements the town became a city and now it is a very big city indeed.
Cities have friends in them, but they have strangers too. They have separate neighbourhoods. Our city has its front page celebrities, but its real character is determined by its ordinary residents, the folks who stick to their own hoods. We live in a sprawling metropolis now. It has a CBD, suburbs, different communities. It has all sorts of institutions: ones for healthy people and ones for those who are sick. Most of us have no idea what goes on the other side of town.
Groups form according to their shared interests and concerns. Some support each other through difficult times. Some are welcoming and love having visitors from outside. Some are quiet and shy groups; they keep their blogs for friends only, quietly and tactfully. Others are different. They seem to enjoy banding together to taunt other peaceful citizens. Then they cut themselves off behind closed blogs or they disappear and come back pretending to be someone new.
Not everyone belongs in a group of friends, there are the lone bloggers who write but are seldom read, and there are ones that silently prey on the naivety of good-hearted souls. It can be hard to know who they are precisely; sometimes a citizen is wrongfully accused.
Like all metropolises, Blogville can be a confusing place to live. I挙e felt a lot of confusion lately witnessing street-corner skirmishes that nobody really understands. Some of my friends have been hurt by them and others of my friends haven«ć even noticed them. For a long time now I挙e been planning a trip away from the city. Perhaps that旧 a good thing. In a few more days I歓l be setting out on that trip. I歓l be away a few months.
I wonder what Blogville will be like when I get back. I wonder if my neighbourhood will be intact. I wonder if I歓l even recognise it. I wonder if I歓l want to stick around.
1 day to go!

I am also wondering, one way or the other. I come back to this site for my friends, but sometimes there are so many reasons to leave. No matter what, let's stay in touch, ok?
And have a great trip!

Polly: That is an incredible description of the devolution of blogland... I haven't been here long in this incarnation, may finally start blogging again..but I noticed when I came back this time how much things have changed around here, and how far it had moved from the village it once was... Hope you do come back...I've always enjoyed reading your blog... (and your occasional excursion into camland ) Take good care
waggypolly replies on 7/2/2008 4:30 am: Any hints as to who you were in previous incarnations?

Online communities are so transient. They always have been. People come and go when real life is more interesting. I look forward to reading about your travel adventures!

Polly. When I first moved into Blogville, it was friendly but with the odd troll here and there. No great consequence. Then wars broke out; one person against another, then an entire neighbourhood against another. Key question here: Why?
Have a good time away. You have earnt it.

Have a wonderful time Polly...
I hate it when people slam the people on "the list". Ive been on it for a year and a half and use to be hurt by this, i dont so much now. Ive got no preference to where I am on that damn list, I even tried to get off of it for awhile by holding back posts and interactions, well my friends wouldnt let me do that. So i continue to get slammed whenever someone wants to complain about us as a whole. Its annoying, and I quit reading alot of blogs over it. Im just here to write.
Sleeping alone?

waggypolly replies on 7/2/2008 9:55 pm: It's silly, isn't it? But it's the same in RL. Being a celebrity just isn't a bed of roses.
The funny thing is that I tend to ease off reading friends who hit the top of the list: partly because they tend to become really busy and partly because I feel I can spend my internet time exploring less read blogs and encouraging other people to write.
Just lately I've not had any time to read unfortunately. ... But I'll come over and see you when I get back to Blogville. You can count on it. |

I suppose I am one of those who is pretty oblivious to the rest of blogland but I too have seen it change. When there were only 50 or 60 of us blogging it did seem like a small world where you could get to know anyone. Now, I tend to stay in my own 'hood and only occasionally go for a walk into that wild, wild megapolis.
All I know for sure is that I will always be grateful that we decided to become neighbors. I will miss your blogging here in the coming weeks. That would be a greater issue were it not for our chance to meet in person in the larger real life neigborhood of Vietnam and Cambodia.
I look forward to that with great anticipation. Cyber is good but real life will always be better.
waggypolly replies on 7/2/2008 9:58 pm: You sure do. I miss quite a lot of the controvosy, but you miss a lot more than I do.
Cyber is good but real life will always be better.
I'm pretty nervous about transforming cyber life into reality. I'm going to have to rely on your support there.
Hey! Time to start another countdown, I think.

Hey sweetie, you've left by now and I plan on following your "travel blog"....know this:
I'm heading up a "grass roots" effort to expand the kindness that exists with true bloggers.
It'll take time..but I think we can overcome the horrific juveniles that want to hurt others. with lies and innuendo. You in?
We can be the change that we want to see.
love you...
