Atheism is...

6/30/2009 12:40 pm
Atheism offers nothing to me. It never has and it never will. It doesn't make me feel good or comfort me. It's not there for me when I'm sick or ill. It can't intervene in times of need. It won't protect me from hate and lies. It doesn't care if I fail or succeed, it won't wipe the tears from my eyes.

It does nothing when I have nowhere to run; it won't give me wise words or advice. It has no teachings for me to learn. It can't show me what's bad or nice. It's never inspired or excited anyone. It won't help me fulfill all my goals. It won't tell me to stop when I'm having fun. It's never saved one single soul. It doesn't take credit for everything that I achieve. It won't make me get down on bended knee.

It doesn't judge me or demand that I have to believe. It won't torture me for eternity. It won't teach me to hate or despise others. It can't tell me what's right or wrong. It won't tell anybody that they can't be lovers. It's told nobody that they don't belong. It won't make you think that life is worth living, it has nothing to offer me, thats true, but the reason that Atheism offers me nothing is because I've never asked it to.

Atheism offers nothing because it doesn't need to. Religion promises everything because you want it to. You don't need a religion or to have faith, you just want it because you need to feel safe. I want to feel reality, and nothing more.

Atheism offers me everything that religion has stolen before...

Religion is like joining the Army, it is a group thing. Living by faith is like winning the Congressional Medal of Honor, it's all about my life and what I do with it.

I think not John. I'm about freeing the mind. Religion is a form of mental bondage.

the new humanism...

and I'd leave Faith out of it...
use hope, and believe and avow if you must...
but I know
that a single entity can have faith...
and it can be
in the indescribable...
yet recognizable.

The world is my oyster
yet I didn't make it
I did make the knife
and I dive, and I take it.
I swallow it whole
and the better I feel
I believe in the oyster
much more than the eel,
since it serves my purpose
and fills my hole
I generate dictates
that it surrender its soul

to mine...
a godless
rational
human being...
on a timed ride
with too many footprints
and no more guides.

It's not nice
to fool
with Mother Nature....

Now nature I can dig. Faith in the on seen and unproven is not reality as I see it. I see belief in religion as being the equivalent of believing in Santa Clause...

There are many things about atheism that have left me feeling empty. The old saying that there aren't any atheists in a fox hole has some merit.....if you are in that fox hole. To me it boils down to one question, two if you're disecting it further. The first is defining the difference between religion and faith. Once you do that, then you have to ask yourself whether you believe all that is in the world, the structure, balance, love, hate, emotions.....where did it come from? If you believe that it just happened, that the faith of evolution is real.....then your faith is stronger than most.

Friend from what I've read here, I don't think that you are qualified to say what an atheist would or wouldn't do if faced with such a situation. I can tell you that this atheist would be in a state of total consciousness. And far from a state of make believe. That I would be paying attention to what's real and what counts. What's going to keep me alive. And that would be making sure that my powder was dry and my aim was sure.

Because nothing else would have any relevance. Definitely not any imaginary being in the heavens. My question for you is do you think that the Christian or any other faith doesn't lose or die in battle? That that Christian didn't pray or have people, love ones who were praying for him (or her)? And what difference did it make for that person? What good did it do?

Religion or faith gives some people the stabilizing point in there life, without they feel empty. Actually they are...they never understood where religion came from. Religion or faith is born out of a self defense mechanism our brain creates to be able to live with the events in our life we can not explain or fear. It connects with one of our basic needs to be in a social network.

The fox hole expression is a very good example, the dangerous situation triggers the defense mechanism to believe in a higher being that is able to save the person or to give salvation.

Atheism deals with the illusion that we create to protect/stabilize our self. It deals with the danger being manipulated in the name of a god or faith. Atheism is simple and based on facts and in doing so offers another form of stability and truth without following a doctrine.

Hey Gin, glad you are in...

Religion is a form of mental bondage
So is joining the Army, that was my point exactly. Let me give you another analogy. Religion is like group sex and living by faith is like a marriage. Very rarely will you find me at an organized religious event, I'm to busy living life. Organized religion has created a bunch of lobotomized lemmings who lack the werewithall to actually seek God for themselves.

Definitely not into organized religion. Having stepped away from it there are many cult like similarities in organized religion. Some people do need structure. I'm glad I'm not one of those people. My faith is quite strong.

Is the belief that there is no god any different than the belief that there is a god? Seems to me that both rely on their own kind of faith. Both faiths can spout arguments, based mostly on some old books written in languages no longer spoken, therefore likely to be misunderstood. The question has been asked, "does praying do any good?" A good politician would start out by saying that this is a good question. "....and I think it's important for people to believe what they want to believe, because that way they can answer their own questions about faith or faith in no faith. therefore, it is important to remember that having faith that there is no faith can best be addressed by asking another question...praying is important to many faithful, and detested by many people with faith in that there is no faithful answer. therefore do not persecute, but prosecute both the faithful and unfaithful. and being unfaithful with your spouse has a long tradition in both dominant political parties, therefoe it would be lapse of unfaithfullness to worry about that issue, even though that was not the question. so I think the question would be better framed if the question were asked "does praying do any harm?".....

Can't say that I agree with you about the atheist and faith friend. I only have faith in myself. Only need faith in myself. I'm only thankful to me for putting the food on my table. I sleep peacefully at night because I make sure that my bills are paid. It's all about being real and facing reality. Again, the difference between the theist and the atheist is that the atheist is willing to admit that he doesn't know everything about the origins of the universe. The theist alleges to know and will try to convince you that you are less of a person because you don't except what they consider proof.

"I think it's important for people to believe what they want to believe" - Mmm, even if it's not true? A lie? A farce? A fantasy? Are you sure that "important" is the best way to describe it?

"does praying do any harm?" - That all depends on whether you're a true believer or not. If you're a true believer, I can't see how it could be mentally healthy for someone to believe that they will be granted anything that you ask *if you only believe* - Then when this promise (which is absolute) doesn't come to fruition you blame yourself. That it's because you did believe enough, or you're somehow deficient.

"Persecution" - The atheist could never be the persecutor in American society friend. That arrogant position has already been filled friend. That's about as possible as a war on Christmas. In other words it's not realistic. Look, people are free to believe what they want to believe. I'm all about freedom. I'm also of the opinion that religion robs you of your freedom. Instead of freeing your mind, it enslaves it. Besides, this blog is about stimulating thought and exchanging ideas. Expressing a different point of view, looking at and questioning the norm. You know. Thinking out side of the box! In sum; I like to stir shit! Yep! That's part of it...
