Earth To Conservatives: Try The Decaf

With word that Homeland Security is concerned about right-wing radical extremists, one must wonder why so many who consider themselves mainstream conservatives are taking this personally. Michelle Malkin, for example, is calling this “a sweeping indictment of conservatives” and eloquently refers to it as “a piece of crap report,” while suggesting its release is somehow connected to tea parties. Similar paranoia is exhibited at The American Spectator and the Liberty Papers web sites. I agree with Jonathan Chait at TNR who asks why conservatives would want to lump themselves with murderous extremists who might be fomenting domestic terrorism. Why are they so touchy as though they are being targeted? Are they really more extreme than they let on? Are they engaged in unlawful activity? Are they planning the violent overthrow of the government? No? Then, move along, and don’t worry your pretty little heads. I don’t like intrusive government, either; but, then I opposed the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping and have always supported habeas corpus. So, why all the tenseness? Maybe it’s too much caffeine... AC

It's a good thing that Cheney and Alberto gave the executive branch all that power and precendents to spy on American citizens, because we are going to have to keep a sharp eye and ear on all the Chuck Norris, and Ted Nugents, Timothy McVeighs, and Sarah Palin rally attendee types in this country. *wink* Can you say TERRORISTS?!

I'm guessing the conservative hydra of talking-heads ( Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Coulter, Hannity, Malkin, Savage, Buchanan, Beck, etc., ad nauseum) are afraid that the unwarranted things they have done to others will be done to them. They know full well how their beloved "BushCo" abused it's power and how they as pundits so often unfairly demonized liberals ( and anyone else who opposed their POV ) as being naive, suspicious, treasonous, or in league with "the terrorists". It's kind of like a habitual liar always distrusting and accusing others because they themselves lie all the time.

You ask if they are planning the violent overthrow of the government. Maybe not, but they are actively engaged in trying to overthrow the legitimately elected government. Remember Whitewater, Ken Starr, etc.? They are not gracious losers. The attack dogs go rabid when they aren't on top. The discourse has turned even nastier than it was during the Bush and Clinton years. Glen Beck and others have gone beyond "socialist" and are now warning against "fascism". I saw a bit of that on the news last night. I think the main sticking point is how general the watch is... If you're a returning veteran, you might be an extremist If you have a conservative bumper-sticker, you might be an extremist If you express an opinion that the current administration is wrong, you might be an extremist Seems to me that the current Administration is using the same tactics that you were so angry at the previous one for using...

Haven't read the report (I'm not that interested in it) but as usual part of the interest is the exposure it gets via the media. What, you didn't hear about the Homeland Security report in Feb. on the radical left wing? It was done and released, but.... As far as habeas corpus, now Barak Hussein has decided that the CIA rules limiting same for enemy combatants are OK. So, where's the left wing outrage on that little point, hmmmm? I may make you feel, but I can't make you think! --- Jethro Tull

It pretty much comes down to one thing; Fear. Now that their boys don't have control of the tools, they're afraid that the methods they supported will be used against them. Is it warranted? Well, I'll answer that with something I heard a lot; You have nothing to fear from the government's methods if you're not doing anything suspicious. Smart as a horse and hung like Einstein

I think this is just the inherent paranoia of the neocons (I still distinguish between the Republican Party and neocons). In a way it reminds me of the paranoia the leadership of the Soviet Union had - whenever their Scandinavian neighbours did something they did not approve of, they tended to overreact. I visited USA in 2007 and 2008; this Caucasian man from an allied and peaceful country had to have his fingerprints taken and retinas photographed; when I returned to Heathrow airport in 2007, they just looked at my passport and said 'Welcome to Britain!' ![]() Norwegian and sometimes blue, but I am not a dead parrot. ![]()

"I don’t like intrusive government, either; but, then I opposed the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping and have always supported habeas corpus." The conservatives put all that stuff in place, it was alright as long as the monster they created was going after anyone but them now the pendulum is swinging back in the other direction and those that ruled by fear, are afraid, they are very afraid because they know the monster they created.

classyginger replies on 4/15/2009 1:47 pm: Oh, do I ever know that Blue. Glen Beck is an uninformed liar. Media Matters has been doing a pretty good job of monitoring him. I think that it’s just a matter of time before he is fully exposed and loses all credibility. I suppose guys like Beck will always have an audience. Even Bush left office with a dedicated 28%. Credibility? Anyone who would believe Rush Limbaugh is so credulous that they would believe anything. If I didn't have any ethics, I'd sell lead painted baby rattles on Rush's show. I'd sell them as "Genuine Conservative Traditional Baby Rattles. Don't let the socialists tell you what to buy. If they were good enough for great-grandmother, they're good enough for your baby." He'd sell them, and the dittoheads would defend their right to poison their babies with shotguns in their hands. ![]() I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man. - Winston Churchill

Too much caffeine? Simple solution. Just give the FDA the same authority they have in protecting the public on issues such as spinach, chocolate, peanut butter...tobbaco...Just regulate and tax the content of coffee. Would be for the benefit of public health and all that. And we all know how nothing slips by the FDA. Blame it on the Republicans for not thinking of it during their administration, blame it on Democrats for not taking the cause up now. Maybe there would have been less people worried about terriosts, and perhaps even less terrorists then. If this is a problem, why not reduce paranoia and terrorism now if the FDA could just reduce caffeine? It amazes me how there is a continual blaming of extinct administrations and the minority members of Congress now, when now would be the time to fix things. I do not recall when the legislature and presidency were of one party, that they spent so much time complaining. Is this the change that was promised in the campaign? I see literally tons of money going to big money. Take a few trillion dollars in hundred dollar bills, and do the math. TONS!!! Car makers, insurance companies, banks....I guess that makes it more important to bitch about Regan, Nixon, and Eisenhower. ????????? Conservitaves concerned about the same thing as liberals would seem to me to be a good thing, an opportunity. Caffeine restrictions and a Starbucks bailout cannot be far behind. Along with a few hundred page amendment with unread and not understood new regulations, oh and fill that with healthy pork. Maybe salted prok would be the very most healthy.
