Just dodged a bullet

As some of you may already know, I work for a government agency which has offices in most every city or town across the country (think about it - you deal with us on an almost daily basis, except for Sunday). I just recently left my post of 8 years where I had a 40 hr/wk FT job requiring 45-50 mins. driving (each way) to one requiring only 15 mins drive time (again, each way) but only guaranteeing 30-35 hrs/wk. Plus I lose my paid holidays and now must work 6 split-shift days. Almost everyone at my old office thought I was nuts. Why would I leave 40 hrs with a set schedule for 30-35 with a split shift???
I have only been at my new post for 2 weeks now. I talked to a guy from the maintenance division yesterday, and he told me two guys at my old office just got their excessing papers, meaning they were doing away with their jobs and would have to A) be transferred to another facility and keep their FT status (closest facility w/openings, 45 mins away from current location) or b) stay at current facility, but go back to being a PTF. These guys were the next 2 guys who were senior in seniority before me. Meaning, if I hadn't transferred when I did, I would have been looking at the same situation they're in now. Luckily, one of those two already had his retirement papers turned in and is set to retire on Sept.1st. The other guy is not so lucky - he has until OCT 15th to decide whether he wants Option A or Option B.
I don't know what prompted me to ask for Reassignment, but thank the Lord above that I had enough sense to see the writing on the wall in advance.
