Romantic problems in cyberspace

Tuesday 8th February 2005

A Jordanian man divorced his wife after discovering that she was also his virtual girlfriend.

Bakr Melhem had been flirting with a women on an internet chat room for several months.

But, when they finally met up at a bus station, in Zarqa near Amman, he recognised her as his wife Sanaa.

Bakr Melhem immediately shouted the Arabic words for 'I divorce thee' three times.

The husband had assumed the online identity of Adnan, while his wife had described herself as an unmarried Muslim lady called Jamila whose cultural interests included reading.

Jordanian news agency Petra reports when the man uttered the Islamic words, effectively ending the marriage, the woman responded by calling him 'a liar' before she fainted.

How is that for a socially entrenched double standard. Like most social standards over the years... written by men for our/their benefit. Not much has changed in 4000 years. Women as property (10th commandment along with house, ox, and donkey). Thinking of the story in the Bible where story were Jesus said, to a group of men wanting to stone a women for adultery, "let he who is without sin throw the first stone".... This guy needs to look inside himself!

Funny, I don't remember "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" ending like that.

Kate Bush wrote a song about exactly this situation called "Babushka." And a one-hit wonder named Rupert Hines had a famous song called "The Pina Colada Song" about this as well.

Hmm... sounds like an urban legend to me.

Not for the last time I will give the mantra...

"oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve."

keithcancook said it before I could... Why can't people just communicate with each other if their needs aren't being met? It's just another example of mistaking lust for love or vice versa. What a crazy world we seem to live in, huh?
