I would try lemon juice diluted with water and maybe a de-greaser , that should work. Have you thought about renting out your Mom's house, you would income from the property to help pay for the taxes. Diane

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/18/2008 11:06 pm:
OMG....my reply to you just vanished! The site is doing crazy things tonight!
What I was saying was...her house is not livable. Three appraisers have turned it down..it won't pass inspection. I couldn't let anyone live in it without breaking the law. I couldn't even get power on cause the inspection won't pass. It needs to be torn down. I "wish" it was rent-able...but, that isn't the case sad to say....

I'll give the lemon juice and de-greaser a try. I haven't tried that yet. The pants look clean..but that smell is still so strong.
( I don't know why he was out messing around in the utility building anyway with his new pants on. That building is so full of junk

Maybe vinegar or baking soda for the pants? (Don't use both at the same today or you'll have an eruption in your washer.)

Hoping everything works out ok for you and yours, Silver.

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/18/2008 11:09 pm:
I remember the first time I put some soda in vinegar. I was a kid living at mama's and I didn't realize just how bad it would foam up!

It looked like a volcano....foam was all over my hand running down into the floor... What a mess!

Thanks for the good wishes....I guess this black cloud will move away some day

Yah, i was gonna suggest soaking them in vinegar, then washing them once or twice. I've also soaked some stinky things in Febreeze (just emptied out the bottle)

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/18/2008 11:12 pm:
Febreeze!!!!!!!! I have a bottle of Febreeze. I haven't thought of that. It's made to spray on cloth...so I could soak those areas in Febreeze for several hours...then wash with some vinegar....

If it still smells this bad after Febreeze...I might as well throw away the pants

a small box of baking soda dissolved in a full tub of water, then soak the jeans before running them through the cycle. baking soda is a natural neutralizer; it won't hurt the fabric. you might need to do it more than once if the smell is really strong. after washing, hang them in the sun to dry.

I have them in the washer right now in baking soda. I bought a huge box of it...and they have been soaking in that most of the day. I'll wash them in some good detergent and not dry them in the dryer. I thought once I do all this soaking and washing...then I will spray the area in Febreeze. If that don't do it....I think they will be thrown away

Olive ewe Olivia 1st of with a HUGE ol hug . Cuz ya needed it I figger . Now onto bizness~my momma was a pipe liner & came home plenty stanky plenty times~Listerine or vinegar are your best bets on the pants gf. Now your daughter~I have followed her through her saga since we 1st met through your stories. She is tougher then you think & your grand daughter will amaze you with how well she adapts. Remember when you & I 1st met? I had moved here to the "ghetto" from my beautiful custom built home on the beach? Had no car because they re-poed it, my business I started seized by the I.R.S. all due to he divorce from the schmuck . It's been 3years now gf & not only have we survived, we've thrived!! It's still hard, I'm still broke , but we're happy. My daughter (who was gonna die cuz she left all her friends) has graduated~see other blog for pic . My son who wouldn't move here with us, now is here too married to a local girl expecting twins. All the "things" I lost along the way have been replaced & for the most part forgotten. The schmuck of an x is now deep in debt & almost went to jail for back child support (karma intervened!!) IT WILL be ok honey I promise. Put Mommas place on craigslist~barter it away for something you need. Rent it for storage since no one can live there. Most of all remember Olive ewe & anytime ya need an ear to bend, or a friend to hug I'm here....

Hey Lady
Yes, I sure do remember all you went through...and I know it was a bad time for you and your family. I'm sure things will work out with my daughter...but it still gets you when things are done that is so unfair. But, that's our laws and until they get changed, nothing you can do about it...but bite the bullet and move on. My daughter had two bad lawyers who didn't try...and she came out with the short end of the stick. But, that happens sometimes. Some win...some lose. Her ex may have won now...but in the end, I think he will be the loser.

Well, I haven't heard of Listerine for clothes! But I do have some and can give that a try too. Right now I have them in soda soaking. Then I was going to soak them in vinegar...and I will put some of the Listerine on them.

Once I get them washed, I will spray them in Febreeze and let them dry outside. If all of that doesn't work....he can just go buy another pair of pants...cause they're out of here

One good thing that happened today is....my realtor called and there is a man interested in the land...( not the house but land). Of course he hasn't said he would buy it...but I hope he keeps interest in it. It would be great to sell it now I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I like your picture you have showing now....it shows off your eyes well....I've always thought you had such pretty eyes

It sounds ridiculous ... but it is true. A little mud (earth - reddish or orange in colour) will remove all smell. Remember just a little will do.

If all ways mentioned by other not working, you can try using mud then.

Life is hard. Don't make it harder. No matter what, life goes on. Be Happy.

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/19/2008 5:26 pm:
Mud? Well, I haven't heard of that...but I can see where it may work. Soil is full of minerals...and minerals can eliminate some odors...and help pull odors from cloth.

Yes...I can see where that would help.

Our back yard is red dirt...so that would work. I'll give all of these other things a try....and I will try the mud thing.

Silver I can sympathize with your daughter about the lose she is feeling. I had my family business burned down by an arsonist while I was away in New York City on a buying trip. The loss is undescribable and that helped me head down my long spiral into alcoholism.
I am not sure if you will be able to get the smell out of hubby's jeans if you have dried them. I work in the textile industry and the heat of the dryer will set most stains and odors. Vinegar is your best bet. Good luck with that one.
Good luck with everything going on this week. I will be

Cheryl....how awful about your family business! Well, I know you know what loss is like...that's just terrible and I am sorry something like that happened.

Fortunately, I haven't put the pants in the dryer so I guess that's a good thing. I have been washing and soaking them. They are in soda right now...and I will try soaking them in vinegar too. I have received a lot of good ideas here on things to try. I will give all of them a try, and if that doesn't work...those things are going in the garbage!

I like your picture....are you at a race track??

Hi Silver, you could try this on hubby's jeans:

Activated charcoal, calcium carbonate (chalk), and baking soda are three major home-cure products for odor removal.

Clothing and Fabric odors: Place clothing or other fabric items in an open container with these products for several hours. Wash well afterwards. If the odor persists, try closing the container for a few hours, but be sure that you do not leave it unattended for very long. If moisture gets into the container, it may cause the growth of mildew.

Febreze, is a spray from Procter & Gamble that is designed to permanently remove garment odors, such as cigarette smoke or pet odors without washing or dry cleaning. P&G also recommends Febreze for household fabrics such as draperies, upholstery, and carpeting.

Let me know how you go with it. Now as I am only new here I am not aware of the circumstances of your mums estate but I have a question for you. Is there some reason your daughter couldn't move into your mums place?

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/19/2008 5:49 pm:
Hi Linda
Thanks for all the odor removing tips. I'm working on some of those now....and I have Febreeze I will spray on them too

OK, there are many reasons my daughter can't move into my Mom's house. For one thing, it's an hour drive away, and she needs to stay here close by in the child's school district since she and her ex share joint custody.
But that isn't the main problem. The main problem is, her house won't appraise...( due to extremely run down conditions) We had 3 appraisers to turn it down..saying the house should be torn down.
That being the case, it won't pass inspection and I couldn't even get the power turned on to the house unless it passes inspection.
The water there would have to pass inspection and it won't. It's not city water..but well water that now has broken tiles inside the well...and the water is extremely muddy...not usable.

That's the bad thing. Since it won't pass inspection, and I can't get the power turned on..nobody would be able to live in it.
It's too bad that it's in that condition and sitting so far away, or I would let her live in it.

I've heard of oxiclean but never used it. I heard it will fade blue jeans. Of course, with this pair...it doesn't matter cause if I can't get the smell out, they are going in the garbage anyway I will try all the things people have suggested. If that doesn't work..it's just not meant to be

It's sad when anyone has to leave all their things behind...but I know it happens in many cases. I feel terrible for anyone that has to go through that.
Thank Goodness that never happened to me. I don't have expensive things...but what I do have means a lot to me. I would be sick if I had to go off and leave it.

I just hope that someday, this nightmare my daughter is living will be just a bad memory...and her life will be so much better.

I hope there are no unforeseen problems with the move and that it's completed with a minimum of stress. I hope your colds go away soon too. ((((((((((hugs))))))))))

The odor problem in your hubby's pants can be solved by a change of diet. Have him wear the jeans while eating garlic salted popcorn. After he consumes a few punch bowls full of the garlic popcorn, the petroleum odor will no longer be noticed. (But keep him away from all ignition sources.)

With it being a petroleum based product, you may need a degreaser first before trying any other remedies.
I think that Craigslist idea may be a good one. That property is a financial drain with not much hope of it being anything else anytime soon. You may be able to set up a barter for services that you can really use. You never know what might come of it. You may be able to really help someone out and help yourself in the process.

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/19/2008 6:29 pm:
Hi Tina
That is a good idea...and one I had not thought of. I pay a man to mow over there...and I could ask him does he need the house for any kind of storage. If so....that may work out. He could store his things there and just mow the place every two weeks in return.

It is costing me money keeping it. Even if the house was in good shape...I don't think I would want to try to rent since I'm so far away. Years ago we had some rental property...and it wasn't close. We thought the man who was renting it was good...or he seemed to be at first.

But, he didn't make his payment...and I couldn't reach him by phone so we rode over there to find he had moved out..( owing money) and just trashed the place. He had ripped a big piece out of the kitchen vinyl floor. Knocked holes in the walls....stained the carpet real bad...broke a living room storm window. The heat pump wasn't working right, and I don't know what happened in the master bathroom but the bathroom floor had rotted from being so wet!

But, the house itself could be used as storage...so that is certainly something I will ask around about

For skunks we were told by a vet's assistant to mix peroxide, prell shampoo and I believe it was vinegar, in equal parts. I understand you don't need a lot. If any of your methods don't work, get in touch and I will find out the exact measurements and products. That stuff he got on his pants must smell horrible. Garage products always smell soooooo bad. My ex and my son love those smells!!!!

By the way, so far my son is loving in in Mo. I hope he can get into something productive. I always suspected he would like it there. I hope it works out!( Don't throw the pants away unless the who pant smells. You can alway make shorts for him)

HI Maddy
I hadn't even thought about shorts but yes, that would work! The area that got the stains on it is all down below the knees. I'm going to try all of these suggestions....and not put them in a dryer since that holds odors.

If that don't work...they will become shorts

I have heard of the Prell solution for skunks..but I didn't know about the rest of it. I'm going to write that down..not that I expect to be sprayed by a skunk but if that works on skunk odor...it must surely work on other odors

A skunk has a terrible smell....I have smelled them...and it makes me sick just thinking about it

I hope your doing well Maddy

I was going to suggest Febreeze also. It has worked wonders on some of my things, especially when the boss's dog rubbed against my pants after being sprayed by a skunk!!!!

Sounds like you really have your hands full. I know some of the feeling your daughter must be going through after just moving in with my parents. I still don't know where 1/2 of my stuff is because a lot of it is out in the garage since there is no room in the house for it and storage is so expensive around here.

I will keep your whole family in my thoughts and prayers.

Come along with me on the The Three Hour Tour

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/19/2008 6:40 pm:
I've never tried the Febreeze on odors like this...but I did try some of a spot where a cat peed and it did take the smell out. I'm going to soak and wash these pants with all the things I have read here...and then spray them with Febreeze.

I think my daughter will be OK in time. All of this just hit her with a shock. She didn't know he had stopped mortgage payments until she got a notice from the company saying he was 3 months behind. They have started foreclosure on it. There is no way she can keep it...and in a way, she is ready to move on. The house holds some bad memories...she still feels his presence there...and it's not a good feeling.

I just feel bad that all she could find and afford was a place not even half the size of what she had...and the fact she can't use all of her things. But, at least it will be something different that the ex didn't live in...and for that reason, I think she is going to be OK. Of course, she knows I am here to help too.

I hope things for you will work out in the end....

I don't have anything to add about the stinky jeans, but re: your daughter's move, maybe y'all could call the Salvation Army or someone to take some of the extra stuff. Might even get a tax writeoff. And your mom's place, I know sometimes local Fire Dept.'s will 'practice burn' houses like that for training. At least you wouldn't have to worry about people breaking in and tearing up the place worse than it already is. Might be easier to sell just the land too.. Just thinking out loud. Hope things roll along as smoothly as possible Silver!

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/19/2008 7:06 pm:
Hi Fire
Well, the good thing is...she has a friend that has a huge storage building that is letting her store things in it until she later can get a larger place. We have talked about having a yard sale once she gets moved in and settled. I could help her with that...a good way to get rid of things and make some money too.

Shortly after my Mom died...I knew the house was in bad shape and I thought it best to get rid of it and just sell the land. I actually did call the Fire Department....and the house has a tin roof. They won't burn one with a tin roof. Plus...it has some kind of fire proof siding on it....I don't think it's asbestos but it could be. I described it to the fireman..and he said NO, they won't burn one like that.

But, my realtor told me there is a company ( can't remember the name of it but for a greatly reduced price, they will tare down the house and haul off the rubble for anything usable in the house such as lumber, copper pipes, tubs, sinks, etc. They get to keep it which is OK with me if they will do it cheaply. I may check into this.

Right now...the realtor suggested not to do it yet. If someone came along and wanted to pay cash for it...they wouldn't have to have the house torn down since they wouldn't have to get a loan and worry about an appraiser. They could actually fix up the house...and fix all the things needed for it to pass inspection..and either live or rent it out. She wants me to leave the house standing for right now just in case. To tell you the truth....if I lived close by and could keep a watch on a renter....I would have it fixed myself and rent it. But, I just live too far away...and would not want to rent living so far away....

Hi MsLady
You know...I do remember something about tomato juice on clothes...maybe it's the acid in the tomatoes that will kill an odor.

Now that I think of it....I "do" remember seeing my mama with maybe a shirt or top or something, lying across the sink and her pour some tomato juice on it. Of course, I was young at the time so I'm sure I didn't know what she was doing....but yes, I remember that now.

If I try all of these suggestions and those pants still stink...they are out of here I feel sure with all of these ideas...surely it has to work..

You should get in contact with the county assessor and tell them - due to the current condition of your mom's house - they need to change the property valuation. That will lower the property taxes on it.

This may sound dumb, but try no scent detergent. That's the stuff us hunters use to wash all the scent out of our clothes. My ex b/f drove a truck so he was always coming home smelling like grease, etc...and I washed them in that stuff and it came out not smelling at all...Like I said it may sound dumb but what the heck give it a shot lol!

That makes sense...cause some with scents just seem to magnify other odors. So far, I have soaked them in soda...then vinegar, and I poured Murphy's soap on it and washed them in that. I hung them outside to dry, then sprayed the area with Febreeze. Right now, we don't smell anything. I'm "hoping" that did it...but just to be on the safe side...I will be grocery shopping today and I'll get some unscented detergent and go ahead and wash them in that.
