Awww sorry about the birdy! We had a parakeet once eons ago..and it would escape from his cage..we didn't mind because we didn't clip his wings...we let him fly around for the hell of it. Well, one day we were walking out...and sure enough here comes BJ flying over us...and he headed right for the ceiling fan...we all closed our eyes..thinking oh no there goes BJ...but he flew through the fan, smacked the wall...and he was standing on the floor...like whoa dudes? Did you see that?!? So, we picked him back up and put him in his cage...and he was ok! Have agood weekend!

When I started reading I was thinking that the bird had something to do with the kitty litter. The poor birdie, at least it died quickly and doesn't sound like it suffered.
I haven't had that problem with kitty litter but I struggle to get things off the top shelves in the supermarket and also in the freezers. I am only short and it really does annoy some days.

Most likely, that brand does sell smaller bags. It's probably your stores fault for not supplying them. If not, try mixing a small amout of another brand in the box. Slowly increase how much you mix in until they are comfortable with the new brand. Might work. And, sorry about the birdie. How sad.

Sorry about the bird.
Anyone that has cats know you can't just "change" litter. Cats are very picky about their litter and they do notice when you change brands. If you change types of litter (scoopable, plain litter or crystals) you run the risk of them refusing to use the box at all. They might go to such extreme lengths just because you changed brands but it does upset them an awful lot when you do.
I would be making a fuss at the store for only having one size! We're lucky that we have a large amount of pets and we have to buy in bulk and we send the young guys out to buy big bags of food and litter. But jeez! We're not the norm when it comes to that stuff! That's just crazy! It hasn't been that long since I had to buy litter and carry it home on the bus - I couldn't imagine having to try and carry 28 lb bucket on a bus.
The only thing I HAVE to do is eat, shit, and die. Everything else is a choice.

The poor birdie glad it was quick...That is a dilemma with the cat litter the only real bad part of this when you get home and the opening problem. Bags would be so much easer to handle and to open and better for the environment, eventually all those buckets will be in a land fill just sitting there trying to break done. Have to check some other stores to see what they have. I have no animals now but when I did all my cats live out side only came in to eat and visit the rest of the time they wanted out. They all live 14 to 18 years. Good luck on your litter problem. For now forget that your Grand daughter should be walking in that door. Have a great week-end......M.

That poor bird but you know it probably had no idea what hit him and it was over very quickly. I will tell you that I wish I had ceiling fans installed when we had a bat fly in the house. Good for you to write to the company about your thoughts on the kitty litter. I should write to so many companies that I have both good and bad issues with but never seem to find the time. I know what you mean about getting caught up on the blogs. I was away for 3 days last weekend and still haven't gotten anywhere near being caught up. Have a great weekend with your grandbaby and stay cool.

Oh, Silver!!!!! When it rains, it pours!!!
I just knew with all the good luck that has come my way with work and my mom this week, someone had to be having a terrible week. I remember when I was about 18, a bird fell out of it's nest (I'm assuming) and hit the windshield of my car. I felt horrible even though it wasn't my fault.

Yep your picture shows. I know what you mean about those pails of little. I use fresh step but with as many cats as I have I would go broke buying the clumping kind because I have three great big litter boxes. I keep it scooped out during the week and then change the whole thing on the weekends. You are definately right about cats not liking their litter changed. My one prissy cat has her own box cause she is so darn picky. If the cats dont cover up their mess in the laundry room she will poop outside the box. She will sit by her bathroom door if any of the others dare try to go in there they get swatted. She also loves to lay on the bay window all across the front of the cats food dish so they cant get to it. Talk about a stuck up cat but she is so friendly and everyone loves her.

If you decide to change brands of litter, mix the new litter in with the old over a few weeks.
I don't even use cat litter for the cats, Scoopable stuff has silica dust that isnt good for their lungs and can be licked off and form lumps in their intestines.
I use wood stove pellets. Its cheaper, it dosent stick to the cats feet to be tracked around and its all biodegradable and the pine just wipes out the urine odor.
On why do they make such large buckets? A great deal of litter is sold in the large discount retailers where people stock up (costco, target, wallmart). Its cheaper for a manufacturer to only make and sell in one size container.
I generally only buy wood stove pellets once a month btw. They come in 40 pound bags . Sometimes I load them, sometimes I have the store load them. Sometimes I unload them, sometimes I have my husband unload them.
I have a bad back ( lots of injuries over the years). So I do what my body is up to on any given day.
Sorry about the bird. Its sad to loose one. At least it was quick.

Sorry that it happened to a bird. I had lady bugs or beetles that flew straight into the blade of my table fan and got killed. Well, it is not funny to think about it but these insects were just clueless and I still dont understand why they liked the fan so much. Now, I have installed an air-con in my room and I do not have to open the window at night anymore ( these insects love the night life! ). So no more insects like them flying in again!

Hi Silver~~Sorry about your little bird~~Guess that's why they call them House Wrens huh?? (Sic) I can remember coming home from the Club some nights whistling Dixie & damn near flew into a fan myself I have a cat named Cat (Housecat)...I buy whatever litter is on sale or I have a coupon for & it doesn't seem to make any difference to Cat...I was surprised to read some of your other comments that it did effect...I can relate to those large buckets & binders for the lids...I think you can usually find some smaller bags (But mybe not the Brand name you want...) I did pass your imfo on Tic removal to non-site E-mail Friends--Enjoy your week-end with the little one..
Be Safe/Warm Hugs~~Bill

Hello Silver!! I hope your migraine is over with. If you have too many or keep getting headaches,i suggest you go to the doctors!! I'm sorry about the bird. It could have been the cat catching him. You must have felt terrible!! On a happier note. Have a great time with your grand child!! Peace from Outoftouch1954

aww, poor little bird.
I am jealous though. When I moved here two years ago, I put up a wren house in the big tree in my front yard - but to this day, no wren has moved in.
I sympathize with you on the kitty litter. I have to use pliers to 'zip' open my kitty's litter too. Your store manager is the one to voice your complaint to though. Scoop Away packages in different sizes - it's the manger that orders the large pails to put on his/her shelves.

Hey Everybody
Well, to save time, I'll reply back here...
My baby sitting ended this afternoon and I had to take a long nap. I'm just now getting back into blogland and my watch list is all a glow, so I'm going to get started in the blogs....
"Ready"....when I read your comment about "flipping the bird", I just about fell out of my chair from laughing!!!! Now, that was funny, and yep....the bird got flipped!
I guess the good thing is...it was quick and I don't think the little bird suffered much. It didn't appear too. It must have broken it's neck when the fan blade hit it.
I did send an email to the company that makes the kitty litter, explain why a bucket that size is not practical for anyone who can't pick it up.
I also agree with what Mike said....all of these litter buckets will end up in the land fill...and we sure don't need more things there. Paper sacks or boxes would be so much better because they will break down over time.
I also sent an email to the corporate office of the grocery store chains...telling them of this problem...and I gave them the name of the store and address and told them they have stopped keeping the litter boxes in stock, all of it now is in buckets...even brands I don't use.
From where I live, we don't have any other grocery store or pet supply stores close by to us, so it's not easy to go somewhere else looking for litter. I would have to drive "several miles" just to look for litter somewhere else, and with gas costing as much as it does, I don't want to use it up hunting litter.
"Artie"...you mentioned wood stove pellets. My store doesn't keep that in stock. I'm not sure here who would have that...or how far I would have to go to find it But, most of the larger stores including department and pet stores aren't near me...so there again, I think about the gas used getting there. They do sound like something good to use though.....
Well, I hope my letters to the companies help. Time will tell.....
I did say something about that heavy bucket to the store manager the day I got my groceries. The manager didn't seem too concerned about it. That is why I wrote the corporate office. ( I also gave the managers name that was on his name tag...and said he didn't offer any help or solution).
Well, ((((( Thank You )))))) everyone for your comment....
Oh, MzHuny....you mentioned having trouble carrying mulch. I can remember a time ( not too long ago) that I would go into a pet store to buy one of their big bags of bird seed ( 50 pound bags) and the fellow would ask me did I need help.....and I said OH No, no problem... Then I would throw that 50 pound bag over my shoulder and walk out...no problem!
I sure wouldn't try that now! I know what you mean....sometimes it does make you mad when you think of all the things you "use" to do
Hugs to All...and have a Great Week!!!

Fantastic Lemondrop....
Maybe if "enough" people write the company or store about this...they will see that a lot of women can't handle these almost 30 pound buckets and they will put it in smaller containers or boxes. I can understand if someone needs a lot of it...but instead of buying one big bucket that you can't pick up....you could get " 2 boxes"....easier to pick up and still have the same amount of litter.
I hope other women will write too, and maybe we can get something done about this
Hugs Silver

HI Bubba OMG.....I can't even imagine how much dog food you would have to buy! You probably buy more dog food than I do groceries!
With that many dogs to feed...they should just bring the food to your house on a big truck Special delivery! I can't imagine the cost!
Well, the good thing about the bird, I don't think the little thing suffered. I think the ceiling fan blade must have snapped it's neck as soon as I touched it. I felt really bad. I just didn't have time to get the fans shut off before it flew right into the fan I'm sure it was scared, and looking for a way out. On top of that...my hubby was holding the living room door open...in hopes it would see it and go back out...but it crashed with the ceiling fan first.

I feed my dobes raw chicken wingtips and necks mixed with what's called a barf mix,Flakey bran, wheatgerm, vitamin c,garlic, kelp, brewers yeast, eggs, mackerel and flaxseed oil. I buy the chicken wholesale and it works out around $5 a day to feed the 10. Their diet is brilliant and I rarely get ponged out by any of them, lol. You would be surprised how good they smell and how shiny their coats and eyes are.

Bubba, other than the "raw chicken", I think I would like this myself! I like wheat germ, garlic, yeast, eggs, mackerel and I have used flaxseed oil. That sounds pretty good actually!
I'm thinking maybe I need to try this. I wouldn't mind smelling better and I could use some shine to my hair!
I don't know about that raw chicken though I think I would have to bake it first

It's insane just how many folk cook their dogs meat when their stomachs were made for raw meat.Don't get me started on tinned food it is all poo lol. I think your hair has a lovely luster Pat.

silverbreeze2 replies on 6/11/2008 11:23 pm: You know Bubba, this is true. I haven't really thought of it but all canned dog and cat food is cooked, and cats in the wild eat all kinds of things that certainly isn't cooked. So do dogs. In fact, just yesterday I saw a dog eating some kind of animal...I think it was a young rabbit but I know it wasn't cooked! Outside cats eat birds, mice, baby rabbits, and anything else that looks good to them.
I was just thinking...I can remember two ladies who had a lot of cats and both of these ladies would fix "stewed chicken" for their cats. I don't know why they didn't give it to them raw
Anyway, it sounds like you are giving your dogs a real healthy diet. They say "garlic" helps to repel fleas in animals. I would think that it does...cause when people eat it,..it repels people!
( and I LOVE garlic But, I only eat it when I know I won't be around close to someone |
