I once saw an episode of "Star Trek", I missed the first few minutes so I don't know how he got there but Captain Picard was in a parallel world. He lived out an entire life. He was married, had children, lived in a community. At the end of the episode he was back on the Enterprise-D. I thought it was the saddest thing I had ever seen. Even if the whole thing was imagined, he had memories that were real to him. He had a piece of him missing. A hole he carried with him. I don't know what made me think about this. Maybe its the idea that we get one life. Many of us spend time wondering, "What if.." The choices we make, the places we go, the way we think. It all leads us to the end of our life but we can't help but wonder, "What if...?"

Sometimes the events that make you wonder, "What if?," are not even under your control. My father died as a result of an accident when I was still a baby, and I do wonder at times how my life would have been different if that accident had not happened. Would I be living where I am now? Would my interests have developed in the same way? Ultimately, though, we have to make the best of the hand we are delt.
Sorry, my Karma ran over your Dogma.

I spent a week end with my brother backpacking 2 weeks ago. We started to compare careers and I soon got into "What if I had completed my ...., Maybe I could be making that much money... It started to screw up my time with my brother. I made a conscious decision to stop the what if, and enjoy the now. It took me a few hours of being in a funk, but once I got through it, I was OK
The choices we make are will always impact our future. We can't change the past, we con only hope to make better choices in the future

We try to resolve as many "what ifs" as possible...some slip through the cracks. I think there are parallel universes...but I'm a "nutter".

Placebo Stud is right about this episode. However, I believe he finished completed the task at hand as the inhabitants of that world told him about it before he returned to the Enterprise. His RW son played Picard as a young man in this episode, too. I was rather sad.
I recently saw a re-run on the Sci Fi channel.

"what if's" will drive a person crazy!
I don't want clever conversation. I never want to work that hard. I just want someone that I can talk to......I want you just the way you are!

One thing that has kept me going after loosing living life one and the what if's situation .... is the thought that I can now live life two without the what if's ....
My what if's have become "what would it have been's", but I can now be what I want to be and free to explore those wants and needs, but like Capt. P, I do live life missing the better parts of the life before and what it could have been .... but you make it what you want and if you want it go for it .....
Regret for what I didn't do, is the worst thing I can imagine now in my life ....

I've never had that problem, but then my life has been a breeze compared to stories I've heard from others...I've always been very lucky in life, always figured there was some spirit world leading my steps always in the right direction....You sound a little depressed, and I feel sad for you...

created reality... the final frontier....
ironically, Adult FriendFinder is the home of the relationship fantasy... so Piccard was either ahead or behind his time.
consciousness takes at least twice as long as reality.
clever takes much much more time on both ends.
canyaz replies on 8/6/2008 10:48 am: Well put. I agree. To miss something that you never had takes imagination most lack. I will stick to loving the life I have. |

I have spent a lot of time over the past year or so wondering what if. I finally realized that it doesn't matter. What matters is what I am doing now and to make life the best it can be with the choices I have made.

If we're thinking of the same episode, Picard was transported to the new life, the new world by a travelling satellite that was sent from the originators planet in an attempt to salvage some kind of memory of their civilization tht was dying due to a water shortage. Picard was "sent there" and was recruited to work on the water shortage issues but was woken up by The Enterprise too soon, only to be left with the flute he had played on the planet...which he later played for Vosh in later episodes
